Basically, there is no longer anything unique about the M3.

(well.. one thing, but we aren't supposed to mention that)
It's the only luxury 4-seater with a stick.

It's also the lightest out of all its competitors (Giulia, C63, RS5).

Plenty unique about it.

See...that's THE problem. Being lightweight and having a stick are major parts of the nucleus of a pure driver's car. Sadly, that fact is totally lost on today's car buyer. How a car feels is just as important as how it performs....BMW's used to do both. Nowadays, all the cars within similar classes "feel" almost identical. That's undeniable!

…we could also add carbon fiber buckets, carbon fiber roof, a lovely/robust Individual color palette, etc.

It's not even all that lightweight and you can't get the best version of the car with a stick.

It's not hard to understand why people want certain options but at this point you only get what looks more or less like an illusion of options.

BMW has to continue to give the Automatic version more power.

Here is their thinking (IMHO):

-A new BMW driver (new gens also)wont know how to drive a manual probably.
-You have to level the playing field for more experienced (manual) drivers vs new Automatic drivers.

But still the manual G8X has a better time on the track over the Automatic with same driver.

It will be the only stick for about another month until the Caddys are out.

They also sound good and have a V8. That will be unique

I don't know about that, because the current generations still drive a ton of manuals here although more and more go automatic for good reason.

There's also no reason to level any playing field, the reason is cost cutting.
They don't want to offer it because they don't think it's worth the money.

At the same time they elected to use a slush box instead of a DCT, also cost cutting.

There is no good reason to buy an autotragic.

Hah, the majority of my life I've driven manuals but going to a DCT for my current car is not something I'll ever regret.

Easy in traffic and fantastic on backroads and track

That said I did end up speccing the mustang I almost ordered with a manual so there is that..

I went from all manuals to a DCT M car and freaking hated it. Just an automatic no matter what anyone says. But to each their own

a) Still not light by any objective metric.
b) I no longer want a stick - I now much prefer DCT (but def. not regular auto)
c) Way too large.

I'll say that, to me, it's not a question of manual vs automatic. It's more a question of what transmission better suits the car/engine/chassis. In terms of M3s I've driven enough to have an opinion about, I'd go:

E46: Manual, I don't think SMG is that bad but at that power level and chassis, it's much more fun/engaging with the manual
E9X: Either, but strongly lean DCT after driving it at/on its limits. If it was purely a street/canyon car for me then I'd go manual.
F8X: DCT. I hate and have always hated manuals in turbo cars, going all the way back to my buddy's 500 whp built STI (built for Dave Mirra back in the day). Boost cut is real lol.

In my mind I'm always selecting the gears no matter what type of transmission but I'm personally not wedded to a clutch pedal and shifter

A). Comparing to other cars in its class is the ONLY objective metric. Otherwise we'd say every car is too heavy compared to an Elise and leave it at that. In the real world, compared to cars you can buy new today, it's the lightest.
B). Opinion. Write a blog post about it.
C). It's size is right in line with the competition.
D). Opinion. Write a blog post about it.

Hammer it into the ground all you like for having a design you don't care for, but let's stop pretending this is the death of the M car. It's faster, lighter, and more engaging to drive than all its rivals, and screaming to the sky about it won't change that.
