Agree with you, Eric. Although BMW's hill assist is loads better than the one Audi put in the TT RS. It's very aggressive and it feels like you have to really burn the clutch or else it stalls. I've taken to simply taking my foot off the brake until it disengages and then driving off.

Garage List
Rev-match should be an option in any mode and easily accessible/adjusted in the iDrive system. They already crammed a bunch of user adjustable options in iDrive, why not one more.

Keep us posted. I have an April 2018 production M3 CP and was told I had no software update available.

Do you have rev match in sport + ? I have been driving my car solely with traction control disabled due to my hatred for this feature and I'm still alive, barely. I wish I would have known about this feature being in all modes before I ordered my car. I may have just went with the DCT. I don't mind hill assist, but rev matching is just too f-ing much.

You hate it that bad huh? Damn that’s a bummer. Don’t let it kill you too much though. I’ve been driving manual since a brand new 2005 e46 M3 and don’t mind the newish rev-match feature at all. Clearly, to each their own but i just hope it grows on you a bit so it doesn’t ruin your overall experience w the f80 M3.

I drove a DCT f80 M3 for a few hundred miles over a long weekend and I really did not enjoy it at all. Too mindless. Not bashing the world-class DCT because it’s great but it just isn’t for me. Not engaging enough.

I don’t like it at all either. Not all the time.

It kills half the fun of a manual, matching revs in downshifts yourself.

Yes, it does.. Unfortunately. On the plus side, you can always turn traction control completely off to have a true manual gearbox.

I do. It's not so bad on the highway but in town it drives me nuts.. I've had this sinking regret feeling in my gut since I traded in my tuned 435i for this car. It's still summer weather here in northern CA so I can take traction control completely off, but this may not be wise during our rainy season that is 1 month away. I hope I can find someone to code it out before then.

Yep, I much dislike it as well. I rarely drive in Eff/Sport so I don't normally have to deal with it but when I do it really catches me off guard.

I'm telling you guys that like it - it slightly over-revs, causing the car to 'coast' for a bit after clutch engagement. Zero engine braking occurs for a couple seconds which is not what should be happening during a downshift. I don't see how you could like this feature in performance-driving situations. Cruising through town, sure, I can see that.

Why would you be down shifting and allowing engine braking in "performance driving"? You would normally be on the gas or brake, not cruising and allowing the engine to slow the vehicle.

Hmm.. Harsh turns on a twisty road... don't want to use brakes every second. Downshift to slow vehicle through turn, instead.. then power out of the turn in the lower gear... up-shift on straights when appropriate/downshift turns.. repeat.. I'm beginning to think that those who favor rev match truly do not know how to drive a manual gearbox. 1.5 million miles under my belt driving cars with manuals. Rev-match = worst decision BMW has made since the 3 and 5 GT

I was interpreting performance driving to mean driving on a track or a similar level of intensity. In the scenarios you mention above I have had no issues with the rev matching performing as intended and engine braking taking over if no throttle inputs are given.

As to your second comment, thats purely patronizing and narrow minded. There are plenty of people who know how to drive a manual perfectly well and love the rev matching feature and plenty on the other side as well. Its akin to saying that anyone who prefers the DCT must not know how to drive stick.

I found it to be extremely annoying at first but I am kinda getting used to it. I am not saying I like it but it is forcing me to sometimes pump the gas a little on a down shift to do it myself sometimes so the car does not.

Any updates whether there is a software update to get rev matching in sport+ after all?

Haha I posted about this recently and people thought either my car was defective or I was stupid. After turning in my 2015 M3's lease, I picked up a 2018 M3 with a production date of June 28th and it auto rev matches in sport plus (need to turn off DSC to inactivate auto rev match). Really annoying and I hope I can code this out.

Some will love auto rev match and some will hate it. That has been the case since this feature was introduced (forced) and it will continue to be the case. BMW knows this, as I have no doubt their marketing teams go through key forums for insights on their products and as part of other research methodologies in their product marketing activities.

That said, there has to a be a reason why BMW doesn't make this a user selectable function, and actually now expanding it to more drive modes. I'm just curious as to what that reason is: is it to protect the drivetrain?? Serious question, just trying to figure out the reason.

Not counting rev. Match Sport+ is mainly there to help you lower your lap times on the track by trickery to keep the turbos spooled a bit longer in certain off throttle situations if I recall right. It’s a pretty useless addition over Sport on the road IMO.

Rev. matching with throttle blip make a lot of sense in Sport+ since it gives consistency to your shifting not upsetting the rear at shifts by abrupt added brake force when you already could/should be close the limit of traction by for example late braking. If you are not Ayrton Senna of course and never miss a heal and toe

That said to each there own and this controversial feature should be a separate button. I really like it and I switch back and forth between my F80 and older analog cars now and then with no tech. and it feels natural. It fits the modern F80 well but would feel totally wrong in an older more mechanical car.
