Not to be a nit-picker here, but our engines are overhead-cam design, and as such, they do not have "lifters" like a conventional pushrod-driven valvetrain. There are "cam followers", which provide a similar function, but they're not "lifting" anything. There have been some issues with bolts in the VANOS system (it dynamically adjusts camshaft timing) that work their way loose, but that's been a known problem for quite some time even on non-M 6-cylinder engines.

Regarding "top of the engine has to come off", that is not quite accurate, either. Removing the valve cover and intake manifold is not the same as removing the entire cylinder head.

Like I said, I am not mechanically inclined, and I've tried to pass as much information that I could with my limited understanding. All I know is that it's not noisy anymore, I did not get stuck with the entire bill despite being out of warranty, and I now know which dealer I can trust from now on.

I'm reading that again. "Measure and repair instructions" to me implies this a known and documented problem. Then why are many of us stuck with dealers who can't diagnose it? Is there an online resource that can list what those codes say? Or maybe someone here knows a BMW tech who does...

I also recall something about adjusting bearing journals, but I don't want to say much more for fear of being corrected again for my cluelessness
