When i simply hop out of my car to close my shops gate, the 2 ft walk makes my car warn me that there is no key

It definitely gives both a visible and audible warning.

There's NO WAY you didn't get several warnings. Problems exists between steering wheel and seat.

Yeah but I can understand the engineering trade space BMW had to work with on this decision. Imagine how pissed you'd be if you lost your key fob with your car running and needed to get home. Hop out for two seconds along a busy highway to help your baby in the back and the fob falls in a gutter, etc. Remote start sounds fraught with peril for theft. I think it's implemented correctly given the alternatives. If you were authenticated to start it that gets you "this" drive, and we'll warn you not to shut off until you put the fob back inside.

For Example, if my fiancé's 650 CG door is ajar, the car will not move foreword. The brakes engage. Many cars just give an audible warning which door is open. I know I made huge error today but, technology is freaking there! Poor design.

Just because a technology allows you to use it incorrectly doesn't mean the technology is flawed.
You have to think above the line here. This is a user error |

Most vehicles that use a key fob once started can be driven until shut off without the fob in the vehicle or anywhere near it. Obviously there is a warning..
As for it being a poor design, please give a reason why? Because it inconvenienced you? The car I am sure gave you a warning, that is not BMW engineering's fault.... Also not remotely starting the car is a security thing. What if someone has all your information somehow and calls BMW and says "hey I lost my key can you start my car?" It would make it moderately easy to steal a vehicle if someone had the correct info which is not to hard to come by now a days. |

A little off topic, but I just tested something that I've been meaning to try for a while. If your car has comfort access and is locked, what happens when you open the trunk and put the key inside the trunk and then shut the trunk. Well, BMW was pretty smart this time around. The car beeped several time and the trunk opened automatically...
I almost did this last week when I changed clothes and almost left the car key in the bag when I went to put it in the trunk... |

this was by design. There is a safety component to this. As in, if you were to get carjacked, this would allow the assailant to get away with your car and hopefully leave you alive stranded somewhere.

Not only that. If the key had to be in the car for the vehicle to continue to run after its been started. What if there was an electronic failure of the key while you were driving? You wouldn't want the car to just immediately shut off because it detected no key because of an electrical malfunction and leave you stranded on the freeway.
I think this should be just a hard lesson learned and probably will not happen again. |
