Traded my F83 in for an M550i
After two and a half wonderful years with my F83, I have traded it in on a 2019 M550iX. At 69, the need for a family tourer and a little more luxury became more acute as my wife's 2014 E350 packed on the miles, but she will not part with it. So we have opted for the M550. Love the car, very quick off the line, but not the beast the M4 was. Will miss some things, but love the quiet luxury and the extra space I have regained. I have really enjoyed this forum over the last two years, so much information and help.....really appreciate it. I will probably lurk here in the future as well, as the quality and level of expertise of the info is higher, generally, than I have encountered on the 5 series forum so far (hope they didn't hear that!). My first question, as a new M550 owner is, what do you guys think of the new performance run flats. Have 20 inch 668M's on it with Goodyear run flats. So far, no complaints. Anyway, thanks again!

Congrats on the new car. Sounds like a better fit for your needs.
did your car come with 20s? If not, just keep it stock and call it a day. Smaller diameter tires are cheaper and more comfortable. I also prefer rft on commuter cars so as to avoid having the chance of dealing with a flat at an inconvenient time |

I really like the new 5 series. I've been eyeballing the M550i but man, that thing is more expensive than I would have thought!

It is one of the fastest depreciating vehicles in the U.S. for whatever reason. A ~3 year old 550xi will be ~55% of it's MSRP. So if you can wait till a 3 year old model emerges (~2 more years), you could reasonably expect to pick one up for ~$42-45k. Just something to consider.

Thanks! After two weeks and 1500 miles I can say for sure that I made a good decision. Plenty of room for touring for four, which was the main reason I switched, and LOTS of performance to boot! Man, does this thing accelerate. I love the all wheel drive, very stable with none of the tail-wagging I used to have to anticipate and deal with (although that was kind of fun most of the time). Anyway, I have had the great fortune now to have owned two M cars ( I know, some don't think the M550i is a true M car, but I did drive it the first time at the M Driving Experience at COTA in Austin, so BMW might disagree), and love them both. There are things I'll miss about my little F83 (the top down high among them), but love the M550i. Not many chances to corner like we did at COTA on the street, anyway. At least not safely, anyway. Just sayin'.

Just an update, after 3K miles with the M550i. Still love the car, feel I made the right choice for me. Although it is not the raw beast the M4 was, and clearly the mass of the 5 series would preclude competing with the M4 on track, I do love the car. The V8 is awesome, with great exhaust sound in Sport Plus (much nicer than the M4). The Steptronic is an awesome transmission, reacting quickly and very much like the DCT in Sport Plus, including anticipating with downshifts as I brake hard (which sounds awesome with the V8). The suspension is very capable in Sport mode, and the car rockets out of the corners without worries of wheelspin, which I really enjoy. And, off the line, quicker than the M4, I believe because there is no wheelspin. In short, different, but wonderful, and I really love it. Starting to really appreciate the luxury and the B&W Stereo during normal daily drives. Do occasionally miss the top down drives. Oh, well.....can't have it all. Merry Christmas.

He said it's an M... it's not. That was my point. Not bashing him, it's a fun little car, but not an M.
