Should I come Back to an F80?

My first M car was an E92 in 2009. I was just 21 years old. I kept it for 7 years and loved it. After 5 years I supercharged it and it really felt special driving it.
2015 I buy my first F80 fully ordered from a dealer (6MT CCB Full Leather)
For some reason Which I cannot figure out I traded that car for a 2017 comp package DCT car.
I then sold the 2017 and bought a 20k Mile E90 Competition Pack 6MT car (my current car)
This one makes great noises and is very engaging to drive but man comparatively it just feels slow.
I have a DD so this car is solely a weekend warrior.
I'm struggling with a little Car A.D.D.

My budget is a max of 60k and I can get back into a 6mt F8x and this time mod it/tune it and go for crazy HP?

I think In an ideal world I'd save up some extra money and get a 997 Turbo in a stick.

Am I missing any other vehicle? I don't think I am In my range.

Thanks Fam
Chris

Yup, can see that! I don't intend to sound arrogant, but I see this all the time here - it is akin to asking a stranger on the street whether you should get a burger or lasagna. Instead, you should ask them where the best chunky beef burger place is, mate.

1. Grab a sheet of paper
2. Write down reasons for buying and selling four very similar cars
3. Figure out what it is that your current e90 is lacking, why does it not fulfil your current/future needs and desires
4. Think if there's anything that could be done to improve your current e90 ownership experience (doesn't have to be just new mods)
5. If not and still want a new car, figure out what you want out of it to change things up (mid/rear engine, track car, NA/FI, JDM/US, etc.)
6. Ask people for opinions now that you know specifically whatchu want

My humble 2 cents:

You kept your E92 for seven years, wrote only superlatives about it, then sold it for two F80s for reasons unknown to anybody, got rid of the '17 and jumped back into the current V8 car about which you, AGAIN, think highly of whilst never saying a single word about the F80. I am gonna jump into conclusions like a Karen here and say that you really love your V8 M3s and never liked the F80 as much.

High-horsepower F8x only for weekend use does not make any sense to me.

Your low-mile E90 ZCP is likely too nice for DD use and extensive modifications ruining the car and its value which is only going up. BUT, if the only thing you're missing is power, well, why don't you just add power to it? Already S/C'd the E92, why not this one? It's reversible. Or if you're nuts, punch it out to 4.6 or whatever Steve Dinan does for $25k. And you'll still have money left for a BBK, nice OEM Performance seats, Ohlins and a concours detail job. Can always part it out with reversible mods and sell it on BaT for good money.

Totally not trying to be snarky (I promise ), but I think you need to take some time in each of those cars to figure out what you want. Drive each car to figure out what you like best and to decide what you want to do. Don't base your decision on reviews and opinions on here. Take your time and enjoy the search for the perfect car. Takes patience, but sometimes the journey is just as satisfying as the final purchase.

Otherwise, I have a feeling you'll be back in this position in a few months. Which isn't a bad thing per se - it's just money, you'll make more.

Hi OP, my guess is you need a car that that makes great noises and makes you slightly afraid and think “is it really ok for me to use fully throttle right now”

F80 has the power but reins it in with dsc on so it doesn’t have that excitement. And the sounds are relatively not as great

My $0.02 is that you need a big block american car like a viper or z06, or an older turbo Porsche with power adders.

Good luck! Have fun!

Sounds like you need two cars + a daily like me lol. A high hp/tq turbo monster and a high revving engaging NA car.

If you have to kill two birds with one stone and want a fast engaging NA car then yeah consider a Viper, C6/C7 Z06, or used 911 turbo like nicknaz said. I think vipers and clean 997.2 turbos are still over 80 though ?

keep the E90 for now until you have enough. they are holding good value. F80s are only going to drop.

I’d hold on to it a bit longer and drive it more.

If you already have a daily then definitely get the 911 or some other stick shift sports car for the weekend. The M3 is a jack of all trades but it definitely isn't as fun as a sports car with three pedals.

That's actually my plan. I may sell my F80 ZCP down the road as I want something more comfortable as a daily. But I am most certainly going to add a sports car to my stable for leisure use.

Hi, I went that route.

My $0.02 is be very very clear on what you want to upgrade (eg low seat position, hydraulic steering, sound, less weight, etc etc) and what you are giving up (eg lower cost to maintain, versatility, etc) because f80 is pretty great. Best 4 door available in my opinion.

If you aren’t precise in your shopping you will end up rotating cars unnecessarily and will eat a bunch of depr and transaction costs

Have fun shopping! Should be some nice buys if covid keeps the Econ locked down

Totally agree with you about doing research and having your mind set on what you want.

I should clarify I was saying it would be ideal to keep two cars in a stable. One as a daily and one as a leisure car (sports car). I would want my daily to be comfortable and have good utility. And I would want my sports car to be raw and exciting. So basically use two cars to satisfy each end of the spectrum, as opposed to one car (i.e. F80) which would be a master of none.

Take it from me, F80 + E46 M3 is a great combo. You won't regret it

Considering all that you said, I would save a little bit more and get a 2016 GT4 as a weekend warrior and mod that.

Another alternative would be a 2015 991.1 Porsche 911S manual that are about 60K.

In my humble opinion, you are looking for something fun, that sounds good and is sufficiently fast (or feels fast).

Hope this helps.

Porsche numbers 0-60mph are conservative:

2016 GT4 Manual is 4.2 (real about 3.9 sec )

991.1 911S PDK is 4.1sec (tested with Chrono pack 3.8 sec)

F80 M3 non Comp with DCT 4.1 sec (tested is also slightly faster)

So as you can see, very similar straight line acceleration. On rolling start you have to shift down the Pcars because they are naturally aspirated engines with linear torque curves.

On track, probably both P cars stock are faster due to traction and better handling. Oh, and many would say these non turbo engines of the Pcars sound better and are more linear in their power delivery.

With a 60K budget you can get plenty of cars: C63S/E63, Alfa Quadrifoglio, M5/M6, Macan Turbo, etc...
