MB USA is very lazy with their configurators, you can still build a W222 S-Class online but those went out of production a while back now as the W223's are starting to be built. |

The used market for these things is gonna be a bloodbath...
Especially if that new C63 is the real deal ... it kinda makes anything not naturally aspirated & special look stupid |

In my ever so negative opinion, I am pretty sure we are now past peak BMW and Merc design. Audi still sort of hanging in there with some of the new RS models. It's been downhill since the 2010s throughout the German land with some very rare exceptions, though. And these are the top models; I swear that nowadays, the base versions are intentionally left ugly to make customers pay extra for sport packs at least. But if the base is a turd, the top is just a polished turd.

(1.) One more chance Given 8ish year platform cycles, we already know BMW has crumbled and their design talent has fled, but what about Merc? This new C63 seem like a genius transitional performance car: way better power w/ way better mileage - everything is better than old ICE. So what will they do with the design? I'm holding out hope it's a kickass mature design made for grown-ass men rather than googly-eyed 15 year olds impressed by clashing florescent colors. (2.) EV transition Performance EVs need high aero CDs in the 0.2s for range and speed - the lower the drag, the lighter the battery, the lighter the car. That's gonna have some big design impact and Benz is already fighting that out with Tesla on the EQS vs Model S for the lowest CD in the World ... in any event, as EVs come into the performance world, design is gonna have to drastically evolve. |

The EQS is going to set the pace and its entire looks are going to trickle down and spread left & right across the rest of their EV line-up. Mercedes has always been very good at copy & paste. They all look the same and have the same design features. There was, however, a short period in the 2010s where the C, E, and S-class were very distinctive (the 221 was just out-of-the-box for Merc). Not anymore again, unfortunately. Should better tone down a bit the current melting-banana look, though. This is one positive aspect that you have to give to BMW, that the 3 and 5 Series just tend to differ from each more than their Audi or MB counterparts. I'm not sure if we're going to see totally drastical changes in the German sphere. Cars are just going to look cleaner due to aerodynamics, like you mentioned. I don't think many customers of regular-ass commuters want their EV to look heavily different to their out-going ICE Golfs, Passats, Tiguans, A4s, Insignias, X3s, or whatever is selling the best in BRD as of now. This is where BMW may crash with their beavers... or maybe not. Taking it from a bit different angle here, it must be said lot of people in many EU countries go for the best lease deals they can find without caring about the brand or looks. And governments are forcing companies to buy vehicles with low CO2 emissions via taxes and extra incentives, so EVs are becoming increasingly common company vehicles. The UK is a great example of that with their BIK. And so one might just overlook the beavers and lack of Hoffmeister Kinks if the deal is too good to pass. These deals and employee schemes are why we're seeing the exodus of non-premium marque saloons in Europe. In the UK, the so-called (Ford) Mondeo Man, a term coined by Tony Blair, now drives a 320d M Sport/C220d AMG Line/A4 S-Line. And the Mondeo is being phased out. Just a slightly unrelated look into how things are in Europe.

another interesting review from a Bimmerposter who started Obsessed Garage and has had a ton of BMWs, M cars, porsches, etc. Nothing amazing, but I always like hearing from Matt.
"a refined F80 with a big pig nose ... everybody hates it, it doesn't look better in person, it just doesn't occur to you as much ... everything about this is too big" but he does like it as a family car.

In total agreement with you - while I think the new class of MBs look good, I also think they are too homogeneous looking within their brand. I guess it’s somewhat symbolic of the lean supply chain that defines modern cars. I mean look at the C & E, if they were driving next to each other I don’t know that I could tell the difference right away (maybe size would be the only give away). Simple things like variations in headlight design go a long way, and my favorite class of MBs is the outgoing class - they are all quite beautiful with strong retro-modern designs. The W213 E-Class coupe is IMO one of the most beautiful exterior and interior designs MB has ever done. I also feel that for the big 3 Germans (Audi, MB, BMW), they’ve passed their design peak and honestly are at best boring and at worst... well we’ve seen where BMW is heading. Maybe I’m just getting old, I never remember thinking that new car designs were boring and unimaginative. Heck I still stare in awe and desire at 05+ Vantages... a design that is 15 years old at this point!
Edit: man the Vantage just doesn’t have a bad angle

I agree that the new G80 is much better as a daily than F80 and especially if you get the Auto vs DCT which is not ideal for sitting in traffic. I prefer the less isolated more raw nature of F80 even though its not polished/boring like the new one. |

He was one of the first with an akra exhaust on the f80 and had the valve rattle issue. Then it was the stones getting caught up in CCBs before the revised heat sheilds. Think it kind of went downhill from there. Can’t remember if he joined the mustang gang shortly after or went back to an e9x

Please don’t ever have a glorious GT4 sitting next to that abomination. The two cars aren’t even on the same planet.
