That’s similar set up, don’t want the obstruction on the windscreen.

Really like the real time feedback from Apex Pro, different concept as it shows how much of the available grip you are using.

Have any of you figured out a good way to overlay obd channels onto catalyst video? I tried recording obd2 data via trackaddict on my phone (I have a obdlink MX+ BT dongle) and then marrying it with the catalyst video but it was a major fail.

I really want to overlay gear/throttle and rpm onto catalyst video. That would save having to buy a full gopro setup to do the same.

The closest idea would be to download the video and separate data and merge it in race render. The only unpredictable part is how I'm sync the data and video will be

You on the green there? That area is pretty brutal when coming down the hill. For the sake of my undercarriage I keep out of there.

RaceChrono Pro works for me.

Syncing takes a few minutes if you use a second camera. I've got a GoPro running for RaceChrono so I can see the Catalyst screen.

Alright, I just pulled the trigger on one with the $100 rebate coming near the end.
Have a track day mid April at Thunderhill West which I have run a few times before and have a decent pace. (1:28)

Really curios to try it out and see where I can cut some time. The M3 is my daily and only car. At my current pace I feel very comfortable and consistent. However, being my only car there is a 10-15% pace that I don't even attempt. Call it my mental insurance, it does handicap my times. I've been sim racing for a long time and know what I am capable of good and bad.... Id rather not end up in the later in real life.

Hoping this can push my buttons in just the right way. Safely help bring me up to the next plateau.

There hasn't been a lot of posting here recently. Anyone have any new input or experience worth sharing?

The Garmin is good for putting an optimal lap together from what you have already demonstrated what you can do. It won't find a better line or a deeper braking zone for you. What it can do is see how your time through a corner is affected by when you brake and what line you take etc. So I would say the best way to utilize the Catalyst is to experiment with your line, brake zones, etc and then look at your sessions for the "opportunities" the unit presents to you.

This is 100% spot on. You must be willing to try new lines, new braking points, blow by corners cuz you screwed up. It's all about experimenting the entire time.

I've never gone off as much as I have with the Garmin cuz I jus constantly trying new things... With some spectacular results.

Oh im totally open to try new lines and flows. Really eager to try the advanced coaching. Major reason I got it. The new update allowing you to export overlay data on your vids came out this week. Just in time for my first event with the catalyst this weekend at thunderhill.

Ha nice! I was just about to quote you suds. How did you like the position of the tablet left of the screen like you posted on page one? That is how I have mine setup atm. But I could see it getting annoying at times on track?

I decided to move the Garmin to the upper right side of the windshield in front of
the passenger’s right side. I also removed one of the linkage bars to shorten the distance from the Garmin to the window. Where I placed the Garmin is in front of the A-Piler where you normally don’t look.
It’s crazy how much the rim pushes through the tire!

The catalyst is really cool. The advanced coaching was exactly the kinda thing I needed/wanted. Was at Thunderhill West Reverse configuration for the first time today. I was on the fence if I wanted to keep it before the event but I think its going to stay now.

Really happy with my consistency and percentage variation across my sessions. I literally had two back to back laps in a session (lap 5 and 6) with the EXACT same time, down to the hundredth. 1:29.95. Crazy!

I also practiced in Assetto Corsa the week leading up and was getting 1:26.5 laps. So im content with a 1:27.2 on my first go.

1:27.2 Best Lap:

Hey everyone - I bought the Garmin Catalyst and I absolutely love it. I ended up getting a full-blown race car (m2csr) and don't need mine anymore since I have an AIM dash. I used the catalyst two times in my F82 lol. If anyone wants to buy mine I'll sell it for $930 shipped. I also bought the storage SSD card for it too which I never opened. Just DM me.

Had my first Catalyst problem yesterday at T-Hill...2 of my 5 sessions had an error as I came off track where the device said track selection was incorrect, and wouldnt you know it deleted all of the data.
I would understand if they overlayed "lap times invalid due to incorrect track selection" or something like that, but at least let me keep the data for review.
At least I had a transponder in time trial group, so there is proof of my lap times.

Saw this article on Speed Secrets I wanted to share. Great breakdown for what to review when you have limited time between next session: 5m, 15m, 1hr.

The speed secret podcast is also really great for anyone looking for technical car talk. Each episode I learn something useful. Enjoy.

So I just read through this thread and something stood out to me comparing it to the rennlist thread.

There were several pages here discussing mounting position of the catalyst itself, with people mounting it in all sorts of places.

Over at rennlist, the big salesman over at rennlist, Peter Krause, repeated many, many times about having the camera mounted on the windshield in a certain way so the camera saw the whole track as it's used to identify your position on the track.

That basically means all these positions talked about here are not good for accuracy. There was once example where a user didn't know why the catalyst was showing him taking certain lines through the track when those were silly lines he would never take, and did not take during those sessions.

The only way you should mount the catalyst remotely is if you get the stand alone camera attached to the catalyst.

I think the instructions tell you to place it as high up and center of the windshield as you can. Then you do an alignment in the catalyst software.

ughh every catalyst comes with a remote camera that you mount up top and center. The software also has a calibration/alignment screen before use to ensure your camera is setup accurately.

Please tell the guys on rennlist to read instructions and listen. P-car guys are usually a little slow and a little too pre-occupied talking about the 18 fake versions of their car.
