Real World Dragy Standing start 0-60mph Times

So just picked up a Dragy 10Hz GPS Based Performance Meter so did some initial testing on standing start 0-60mph real world tests of the 3 cars currently in my household to see how they stood up against each other. Each of the results posted and referenced were the best of about 5 different runs that were done on each vehicle. Because this is the F80 M3 forum I will provide some additional info on my F80 M3 it is a 2016 model loaded non-competition with 8k miles on the clock, it is completely stock when it comes to aftermarket mods/tunes and is running on the original factory rubber Michelin Pilot Sports (non 4s) as they are 4 years old and would guess the rears have 20-30% of tread remaining.

So here are the times and draggy strips for the 3 vehicles currently in the garage 0-60mph:

1. 2016 BMW M3 F80 non-comp (stock no-tunes): 5.13s
2. 2013 BMW 335is Convertible (stock no-tunes) with Michelin PS4s: 5.75s
3. 2019 Volvo XC60 T6-R Design AWD Polestar tune from Factory: 5.89s

My biggest issue on running the standing start on the F80 M3 times was getting the back tires to connect, it seems no matter what I tried I was getting significant wheel spin off the line and even on the 1-2 shift. I tried several setups including one using the launch control (with DSC fully inactive) which was an epic fail as tires just lit up for what seemed like forever and I lost a ton of time. Also tried no LC start in Manual mode with MDM traction control and Sport+ in all settings and that is 5.13s time presented still had plenty of the trac light flashing in both 1 and 2nd. I fully know this vehicle is capable of much quicker 0-60mph (Factory rated 3.9s with DCT) but in my experience they were not easily achievable with my tires and current setup. And while I have known this basically since I got the vehicle new, this is not a mash the accelerator off the line and expect to be quick vehicle. Takes a lot more finesse of the pedal to get the rear tires to connect and then lay into the power to run a quick time. This vehicle shines in so many other aspects but quick standing start 0-60mph in real word scenarios that are easily repeatable without much effort is IMHO not one of those areas. Others who have dragy and an F80 would love for you to share some of your slips, setups and feedback on specifically running the 0-60mph times.

Will say most impressed with the sleeper Volvo XC60 T6 posting a 5.89s 0-60mph while Admittedly no where near as fun or as visceral as the F80, clearly shows the advantage of having AWD for running timed 0-60mph pulls. So to wrap this up, my 2016 F80 is being traded into the dealer and I will be moving to a 2020 X3M Comp for the next 3 years on Lease. Couldn’t pass up on the December programs and the $699/mo payment incl. 7% FL tax. Post that or possibly earlier if I LeaseTransfer would love to move back to an M3 in the future G80 platform with M xdrive. Will probably wait at least until the 2022 MY as curious to see the real-world feedback and give BMW time to work-out any of the early bugs.

That’s interesting. I’ve had a 2011 335is convertible with DCT for the past 6 years and absolutely loved it! It has always felt quick especially under 60. And it is very easy to launch and accelerate without any drama or traction control kicking in...just a satisfying chirp between 1-2 shift. The M4, as we all know, and as your test found, is a hand full off the line or even from 10 or 20. My M4 is fighting for traction ALL the time. I did just get it in November though so most of my driving has been in cooler/cold conditions and less than ideal road surfaces. I’m looking forward to warm temps and good roads in the spring! Based on your test time, I’m wondering how likely any of us are going to achieve that 3.9 sec time in the real world? I’m just just going to shoot for 4.1 because I have a convertible.

Your tires are the problem, they are old and tired. Swap to a set of Michelin 4S’s and your acceleration potential will go WAY WAY up.

It's your tires, I had the stock 19" with worn tires like yours it was nothing but spin city. I swapped out for some really clean and new 20" comp pack and almost new mpss and the car just hooks and slingshots forward. At 3500 rpm launch control.

Thanks for the feedback and to be honest know that would likely be big help and is probably a big reason for the poor times and why I was clear about mentioning the status of the tires in my post. I am a huge fan of the 4S's and thats what I run on my 335is Conv and they have been great and I noticed a big improvement on off the line hookup and steering sharpness and turn-in when I made the switch from Michelin PSS. Unfortunately for me I'm at the end of my road with the vehicle so will have to be the new owner that benefits from the new rubber. Dealer mentioned they will be putting new tires on, so if I'm lucky and they let me sneak it out for a short test drive before it's sold I will try and do another Dragy run or two and post results back here. Still would love some other stock F80 Dragy results to have some points of comparison and know setup used for launch.

Speaking of spin city on my tires, I am pretty sure I went from LC 3000rpm all the way to 1st gear rev limiter there was no bite, or hookup to speak of. I pretty much scrapped the run and backed off once hitting the rev limiter. I'll be the first to admit I haven't used the launch control prior on the vehicle as I never really felt the need to. Now I guess i'm kicking myself a bit for not playing with it some more earlier with better tires, I am looking forward to realistically pulling sub 4s runs 0-60MPH in the X3MC without all the fuss and just a little brake boost off the line. I'll be back to the M3 platform again, but I can assure you for my own safety and sanity it will be M xDrive for sure.
