I see both sides and truly don't know if it hurts or doesn't matter. I lean the negative press can't help though. This is a good point though.

This has been my thought since the renders were released here years ago, the front fascia is just plain ugly. It frames the grilles in a way that makes the car look bloated, and is why I think the regular 4 series front end looks better. Looking at these renders, it's clear that it is benefiting from two things: 1. the wider body helps to balance out the grille's proportions (the alternative with the standard narrow body would be to shrink the grille slightly) and 2. the fascia itself has bigger intake channels and has minimized the design element in the intake channels (pic below to show which element, introduced to the design language originally with the OG M2 AFAIK).

Can't wait for all the denied warranty claims due to the bumper having restricted air flow.

Let's not forget that BMW has hired a couple Mansory and AC Schnitzer employees to do their aftersales body kits. Not even Lexus or Civic owners could have come up with this exhaust system style.

The M Performance parts are a massacre of design. I saw a photo of the G82 on instagram which uses aftermarket parts (not M-performance parts but look similar) and sadly from the thumbnail of the image I mistook it for a Lexus RC-F Track Edition. This isn't the first or last time I have mistaken a G2X/G8X for a Lexus IS/RC.

There would be no restricted airflow. In the middle of the giant factory grills there is black solid bar(essentially creating two separate grills top and bottom like it has always been). You will never have full openings due to crash impact bar. The big grills are a failed styling exercise, nothing more. They are not for increased airflow, they just look like big openings but actually are separated.

Holy shit those two images make them look almost identical.

I thought you swapped the logo out on the bottom picture just for laughs but then I saw the exhaust is sideways... Damn

If you were on the fence and you started hearing all these poor driving reviews, you'd be less likely to take delivery. Them having the embargo helps shelter the buyer from the negative reviews and by the day they are set for delivery, they will be so excited that they would probably just go forward with the deal. Its an emotional decision for many people and they don't want people to feel they have a loser on their hands.
It's not like I haven't heard negative things about prior M's. Every new iteration it's something. If it's not the steering or horrid turbo lag, it's something else. I buy for me, not what some reviewer thinks. Oddly enough, the one time I did buy a car strictly based on reviews - an 04' Infiniti G35 - I absolutely hated it. BMW 3-Series killer it was not. I was back in a BMW in 6-7 months.

You and I/most here do this. But you know there are a ton of people that care a lot about what others think of what they drive in this segment.

Edit: Why else would stripper 320 leases be so popular when you could buy a nicer/loaded Accord/Camry for similar money.

Somewhat related... but what's the pool on what the "fatal flaw" of S58 is going to be? You know, the one that only the magnificent minds at independent auto shops can fix for you

Yes & no. We read because we are enthusiasts. The words of auto reviewers touch us. The vast majority just go into a dealership and buy. They aren't on these forums and surely aren't reading mags.

Does my theory seem legit?

That grill is saving BMW sales, so BMW built the car and realized holy fucking smokes this car looks awful, no way it will sell, unless, unless, we smokescreen it and so they did.

Insert massive grill, everyone averts attention to massive grill, says yuck massive grill. Forgets the rest of the car and says if the grill wasn't so huge maybe i would get one.

Out comes BMW and sponsors small shops to create retrofit bumpers for free, i assume this is a cheap alternative

BMW sells the mistake they made and profits.

As i said this is the prevailing theory on the grill, it was sent there to divert attention, and the bumper solutions are coming out fast so people are very hopeful they can just slap on a 2k bumper and have a sweet M4.

Little do they know, bumper or not, they are focusing on the wrong part of the car.

I know plenty of people who go "if the grill wasn't so big i would get one it looks good otherwise".

Like uh no it doesn't, but there you go, it's all people care about.

I wasn't talking about reviewers and mag articles. But what non enthusiasts think, hence my example. BMW has tried like hell via the influencer crowd to create excitement for this thing with terrible results according to the comments. Those are the "reviews" a lot of people read.
