Burning Smell - UPDATE: Oil Leak

I have an appointment at the dealer tomorrow but thought I'd ask here as I cant find anything by search on this. My car, when driving and sitting in traffic and when I park it in my garage emits serious diesel burning smelling fumes. It's pretty bad as it enters the cabin will waiting at a light and completely fills up my garage after shutting the car off.

It's the winter here so this is even after driving the car normally, not flooring it or even reving over 4k.

Has anyone had this issue?

thanks

no, my exhaust is a stock exhaust but it's pretty overwhelming, smells like burnt rubber or diesel fuel, not unburnt gas smell.

did you drive over a plastic bag on the road? they can get caught under your car and melt to the exhaust / etc. Then you are stuck with a burning smell for a long time. Happened to my wife's car. Would fill up the garage everyday with that burning smell.

Do you see any smoke coming from any area of the car? As the other guy said, it could some plastic bag stuck to the exhaust. But other than that, there shouldn't be any smell what so ever. Take it in and let us know.

Oh and...GO BEARS!!!!!!!!!

Based on title I thought this could be tires smell but after reading through the thread it is obviously not it.

If I have a spirited drive home and a few WOT runs and then drive it to cool down on the way home it sometimes smells hot. I put it down to the brakes/Catalyst. Doesn't worry me as it's not too strong a smell.

Oil leak? If it smells like diesel could be something dripping that you can't see, I presume there's no residue on the ground? Your oil level is ok though isn't it? If it's drastically over filled then excess oil can get forced through the exhaust into the catalyst. That ruins the cats and stinks too (but the car usually warns you if it's overfilled even a little bit).

Also check your top coolant expansion tank (one near the windscreen). If it's dry then the coolant could be leaking into the engine from the charge cooler and would be burning off and creating a sweetish smell from the exhaust.

Plastic bag is a good shout too.

message from the service advisor

The valve cover gasket is leaking oil & that's what you are smelling. The tech confirmed the drivers side center vent has poor air flow. He'll be taking it apart to find out why.

dont mean to revive an old thread but this is exactly what happened to me - the day after driving over a plastic bag i got a burning smell. Im guessing the only fix is a deep spray of my under carraige to try to get it off?

It won't come off by spraying. Your best bet is to just keep driving until it burns off completely.

Hi, I had the same issue when my VCG leaked. It smelled like an oil fire and took me cleaning from top and bottom and some driving to get rid of the smell.
