Issue with M Performance Electronic Wheel

So I've had this wheel for a couple months now and everything is great except one thing. Whenever I shut the car down for a short duration (about 10-15 mins), the wheel will stop registering the current RPM so the shift lights won't work. Basically, if i shut it down for just a few mins, everything is fine but an extended period of time causes this glitch. It gets reset by leaving the car alone for an hour. Not horrible but becomes annoying on the track since you only get your shift lights for the first run...

Notice in the image, it shows 0 for current rpm, it should be around 600-700 during idle

Any ideas as to why?

I had my M Performance Electronic Steering wheel installed VPC hoping for a perfect install and have the same exact problem. Its very frustrating and annoying and I have not been able to find out why this happens but the same problem really annoys me on the track. Hope someone has an answer and a solution.

I self installed the wheel about 2 months ago. I have not run into this issue. You can always check the work of the installer, especially the tap connections, to make sure they are tight. You can check out the DIY for how it is installed.

Are either of you running anything that taps into CAN bus or the OBDII port, such as a JB4 or aftermarket display gauges? There is potential for conflict there.

Wow, thanks! I've had the BMS Can Flap module plugged into my OBD2 port for exhaust valve control and active sound delete and at the track I remove it, manually unplug the valves, and then plug in a OBD2 reader to work with Harrys lap timer and track addict for input. I suppose these items keep interfering with the RPM shift lights? Its interesting that everything else on the wheel works fine except the shift lights and that the issue is only intermittent. Thanks again for any additional advice/insight you might have...

I've the got the same problem as well. It usually happens when the wheel is on, you shut the car off for a quick stop and then get back in and start the car again (Gas fillups for e.g.).

I too have the BMS Canflap in the OBD2 port and I think that is the cause of the issue with CanBUS conflict both trying to read at the same time.

Ah I don't have the CanBus, perhaps shutting the wheel off before turning the car off could help? Such a frustrating issue

I have had mine installed for about a month. Have not had this issue. However, twice I accidentally turned off the leds/shift lights by inadvertently pressing left and right buttons together an extra time when turning the wheel display on or while resetting the timer in sport mode. To turn the leds back on, do another simultaneous press of both buttons. Can be a bit confusing, since other functions, like the timer reset, require the same/similar command.

Just a heads up, the steering wheel is integrated into the PT-CAN which is a separate system of the (vehicle) CAN. Two different information busses. Although there is information exchange in a few modules (the kombi for example), they are generally separate.

I notice my wheel doesn’t register when the car sits in hot weather. Once it cools off at night or in the mornings it works fine.

Unfortunately, it’s normal for the lights to not work sometimes. I also lost the lights entirely when using BMS Can Flap or Macht Schnell EVC modules. It will interfere, Tom @ EAS and I have discovered this a while back

But I still love the wheel, just wish the heat wouldn’t affect it as much

Heat only affects the center-screen display. If you turn on the wheel by long, simultaneous pressing of both buttons, some of the LEDs on each side will light and flash to confirm it's on and will run without center display until cool enough. LEDs will still function. Once the cabin cools down--few minutes with AC on or windows open--tap either button to turn on the center display.

Has anyone figured out why this is? I have this same exact issue in my 2020 M2C..... it seems it's just a quirk or the wheel since it obviously hasn't changed. Do we just have to accept this issue as part of the package or is there a fix anyone has figured out?

my current guess is that if the wire tap connections are not 100% solid you will experience these issues. I have read complaints about the quality of the wire taps that come with the hardware.

I have thought about getting the connections re-done and perhaps soldered, in my own experience I have observed the following:

- if you start up the car and it is not reading the RPM, then it will never start reading the rpm for the duration of that power cycle (ie. it may start reading if you turn the car off and then back on)
- my RPM read has only failed a handful of times, all of those times were during the colder parts of the year and when starting up the car for the first time in the morning (ie. everything is cold)

Any update on this? I'm having the exact same issue and have redone the wiring with better connectors. I can not find a pattern to it....

There is no fix, as it's a correlation issue between both CAN lines. The only "fix" is either waiting, or performing a battery reset. I've installed an interruption switch in the passenger side footwell that disconnects the PT-CAN from the steering wheel control module for 30 seconds, and allows it to reconnect. Annoying, yes, but it's sufficient.

That's weird, I actually had mine replaced under warranty because they saw the errors, of course the harness wasn't available so they replaced the whole steering wheel.

Of course, it happened again -- I waited it out and it eventually fixed itself.

That's what BMW's test plan calls for, but it won't fix anything.

Got it installed yesterday and same issue. Wheel not reading the Revs. Turned the car on this morning, and it was fully operational. Went to the post office and boom. 0 on the revs screen. Turned car off for an hour like I read on here and still not working. Very distasteful for a 2k price tag.
