666M Wheel and Caliper (Help and How to)

Ok I think this wheel and caliper color combo stands out so beautifully on this car but it is a pain in the a$$ to keep clean, both the caliper and the wheels. As soon as i clean them or wash the car and drive off the dirt and grime come back as expected.

My question is, Is there an an easier proven method to say to be able to remove the dirt easily by having a coating put on them?? Also whats the best method to clean this type mesh wheel easily?? I keep jacking up my fingers having to fish in and out every nook and cranny gets annoying after awhile.

Any help is appreciated.

BTW ive tried polishing the wheels (on the car) to see if it would help make the dirt fall\come off easier but didnt seem to help much. I even have the small brushes to get in the bolt holes but those angles crevices are a bi%$@.

Thanks in advance.

Get akebono brake pads first of all huge improvement. Then after first cleaning get spray on wheel cleaner / iron x spray each wheel before wash. Rinse wheel with pressure washer and you'll be 90% clean. I usually just dry them off and call it a day.

Change the brake pads to Akebono Euros. Buy Sonax Wheel Cleaner, I recommend the extra strength one and it's almost touchless. It smells really bad though so do it in a well ventilated area.

I took all four wheels off and cleaned them thoroughly and then did 3 coats of ceramic coating. My silver 666s stay almost completely clean now for really long periods. Also very east to wipe clean with a good microfiber towel and there is almost 0 brake dust that accumulates.

I gave up, I’ve got track rubber still stuck on both car’s rims and they are dirty.

Ill have to look into the Akebonos but in the meantime ill probably have to get a bottle of that Iron X and see. I have the Sonax wheel cleaner someone else recommended but i was expecting more.

Thanks again for suggetion.

I think im leaning more towards this option after trying spray on cleaners and the like. How much did it cost to ceramic coat all wheels and calipers?? And how long is that supposed to last approx under the heat and stress??

Thanks again.

Coatings may or may not make it easier to clean but they don't prevent dirt and pad debris from coming to sit on these wire spoke wheels....

Another shout out for the Akebono Euro pads due to their excellent braking performance and very low dusting. As far as wheel cleaners go, I would not use iron removers like Iron-X on a routine basis. Save those for the occasional deep wheel cleaning. For very effective, including cost effective, routine wheel/tire cleaning, I would recommend P&S Brake Buster or Extra Tough Wheel & Tire cleaner. I have both of these and they come highly recommended in the car detailing community (especially P&S Brake Buster).

Akebono++++++++

Took an hour to put all four in by myself. It's a night and day difference. I should be an akebono sales rep at this point.

Like Jmciver, I also use P & S Brake Buster Total Wheel Cleaner. Spray all four wheels, and then come back to the first wheel I sprayed. I then hit the wheel w/a wheel brush (nothing crazy, just to knock any stubborn build up) finish up by rinsing off w/a pressure washer. Move to the next wheel, and repeat.

Did you change out the brake sensors when you replaced the pads? Is that necessary?

I didn't because I swapped them when my car was relatively new. But they come with the pads I think and are easy to swap. This car has the easiest brake pad replacement I've ever seen.

Here's what works well for me. My brake rotors are steel and the rotors/ brake shields always look brand new...

1) Spray wheels AND brakes with Sonax
2) Lightly agitate with a wheel brush
3) high pressure rinse
4) Immediately drive the car around the block before the steel rotors start to rust. Very limited in time here...
5) Wipe down wheels with microfiber cloth.

This.

Also, get your wheels ceramic coated. Then just a simple pre-wash foam that you use for bodywork, followed by pressure wash, will get most of the dirt off. Then clean the intricate areas with a brush and MF towel. One wheel incl. wheel arch takes me 3 mins.

And further, not caring about brake dust as much helps a ton.

Sure it is safe for your car’s paint (and painted wheels) for occasional paint decontamination. I use Iron-X (or actually P&S Iron Remover as it is basically the same stuff but cheaper) for that purpose 2-3 times a year on my car’s paint and wheels - max. But for routine washes, every 1-2 weeks, I would not want to use it. But your car so your choice obviously…

You can get it from just about anyplace for essentially the same price so Google is your friend here . However, I usually use The Rag Company or Auto Geek for most of my P&S products as they both have frequent sales and/or good coupon codes floating around.

One other tip to consider for you guys for cleaning and helping to keep your wheels clean…. While ceramic coating your wheels is clearly a very good option to help keep them clean and make cleaning them easier (the wheels on my M3 are ceramic coated), Gyeon Wet Coat is a good short term protection alternative. I use this primarily on my wife's X3 and my X7 (and I use it as extra protection on my M3 wheels as well).

To use it is very simple. Clean and rinse your wheels using the method of your choice. While your wheels are still wet, spray it on (a little goes a long way) then immediately rinse off. Dry your wheels as you normally would (a leaf blower works well). If you don't have any form of protection already on your wheels, your wheels will get an instant hydrophobic (and gloss) boost of protection. It is claimed to last 2-3 months, but the best I have seen is 3-4 weeks (on a daily driver that is parked outside). But that still makes the benefit worth it to me.

There are quite a few YouTube videos on using the stuff for this purpose as it has been around a while.

Thanks I ordered a bottle off amazon. I have yet to try it though wanted to make sure i understood how its used first which based on what you said sounds simple enough. I will try it next wash. Bottle was smaller than I thought it would be though.
