Michelin PS4S Question

I’d appreciate some tyre advice please. Wanting to change my F82 M4 competition tyres from PSS to PS4S, as I have these on my Cayman and they are excellent.
Weirdly though, I can only find the 285 30 20 rears in BMW homologation, not the fronts 265 30 20. I’m persuaded that OEM is better due to the R&D but combining OEM with non-OEM on a different axle probably defeats the point. Is it better to just put the generic PS4S on both axles or generic front and BMW rear? Thoughts appreciated, thanks.

I have aftermarket 4S tires on 18" wheels and they are great. There is a video on Youtube comparing the OEM and aftermarket tire with the conclusion the OEM tire using more rubber compounds (5) versus (2) has a slight improvement in steering feel and dry traction. In the wet testing the aftermarket 4S was slightly better.

I run 275/295 MP4S on my F82
No rubbing issues in the front.

There aren't any PS4S with BMW star specs for the front in original size. The PS4S isn't made for the F8X with BMW star specs.

You can put on the 275 from the G80 (which is a FRONT tyre) or go with the 255 (but that is a REAR tire from the G20(?) - as it is a rear tyre this is not recommended, because the stearing feeling isnt that good with a rear tyre).

If you want to go with the original tyre size u should take a non BMW star spec tyre in the front.

just run normal 265. any brand. dont worry about star rated etc.

I run 275/35 and 285/35 18s. Big difference IMO vs my Hankooks V12. Ride comfort was my #1 concern, performance and handling was even better after alignment/corner weight. tires are very quiet.

Diggin up an old thread as the original question wasnt fully answered. Is it better to have both front and rear on aftermarked MPS4S tires or run the 285 BMW star tires on the rear and 265 non star tires front?

Thanks, which rims? And no spacers? I want to run the OEM CS wheels which are 9J so not sure about 275 on those.

And still no answer about mixing star rated tires and non star rated tires

The standard non * star spec MPS4S is much better than the BMW * spec PSS' or PS4S. Rear's are literally almost 1" wider. BMW's OE tires are a compromise for noise, handling (or rear end playfulness), customer acceptance.

Stick with 265 up front, 275's up front on 9" wheels feel like garbage (I've tried it).

My thoughts exactly on the 275 front. I’ll stick to the 265 non star spec on the front.

So should I get 285 star spec or non star spec for the rears? Price in Europe is the same for either tyre

I am on stock 666 wheels and comp suspension. No spacers needed.

The PS4S is not available in the UK for 18'', this made me cancel my order of the 513M wheels as I did not want to downgrade on the tyre and pay the 4k on top.

Only the PSS and the PS5 are available for 18'' wheels, the PSS has way too much NVH for my taste and the PS5 is just not made for performance.

I personally run 295 on the rear, it's 11.1" wide versus 9.9" wide of the BMW star spec 285 -> you can clearly see the benefit of traction here.

I run with CS+ BM3 tune with euro MDM and still have some playfulness but 100% controlled. Way faster with 295's IMO if using the standard non-star spec.

I'm on 666M's for reference.

Will I have any issue using 295 PS4S on my stock ZCP 666m rims? I'm not lowered or have any spacers.

This is the closest pic I have off-hand, it sticks out maybe 2-3mm from the edge of the rim, basically curb protection.

Beautiful car. I have the exact same car, but white, 100% oem, with the M exhaust and carbon everything inside and out. Haven't put a BM3 tune on it yet, but constantly thinking about it.

Does the tire stick out wider than the top of the rear wheel well?

It's more flush with the inside of the wheel well, there's no rubbing or anything at all on the fenders on stock setup and I drive the car extremely hard (in the mountains of NC here).

It's a very wide setup though that sticks out from the side of the rear bumper significantly.

Do you find that with the wider tire you are getting road rash on the sides of your bumper? That’s what I’m mainly concerned about. The stock 285 PSS put no road rash on the sides of the rear bumper. I’m worried going wider will. Sorry for the 500 questions just really want to make sure I’m making the right decision.

Honestly I expected more damage from rocks but I have very little damage to my rear bumper a few spots. I get more melted rubber than anything.

However it is definitely very wide and MPS4S are stickier so you will get more. Just get the rear sections PPFd if worries about it IMO
