Windshield Replacement
Hello all, recently while driving my M4 on a highway I received a small crack which then obviously spread into a much larger crack on my windshield. I went to my local dealer here in Atlanta, United BMW, to get a quote for OEM Glass. I have HUD & know that some generic windshield brands don’t support use of the HUD. Here is my question, the dealer quoted me $3,199 to replace my windshield.... this seems outrageous to me. That includes SIX (6) hours of labor. I am not mechanically inclined but Ive never heard of a windshield replacement taking that long. Am I out of my mind or is that number the going rate for an OEM M4 windshield installation?
I have had a bunch of other cars and had my windshield replaced in those, 911 GT3 RS, Mercedes E63 S AMG (had HUD) as well as a Cayenne Turbo S. All of those were under my quote for the M4 and all done here by local dealers. Sorry if this is the wrong sub forum, haven’t seen any other logical places for this to be . Any info would be awesome. Thanks! |

It does need additional calibration of headlights (camera is in the mirror) per bmw which I dont know how much is . they did not change rain sensor but what can be wrong with the sensor that dealer will charge you for new one + the labor etc ?

I recently had my front windshield replaced.
Took it to a local windshield replacement shop for the work as based on my research here and in general, most dealers use a third-party to replace the front windshield. As such, I decided to take it to a local shop that specializes in it. Cost around $1,400 installed (of which I paid a $250 deductible) for OEM BMW glass, rain sensor, window cover, and sound insulation. The price you were quoted seems outrageous although the post above mentions headlight calibration (which may apply if you have the anti-dazzle enabled, or possibly for the auto high-beam). My car was not calibrated as I did not find mention of it during my research - you may want to dig further re: calibration. |

Thanks for the replies and insight everyone. I checked with the dealer and the calibration for auto high beams and rain sensor takes approx 1 hour. Doesn’t really explain the other 5 hours of labor or missing $1,000 over safelite or a 3rd parry shop. I appreciate everyone’s help!

If you have driver assist, the front camera needs to be calibrated for lane departure and frontal collision warnings. But I don't think it is a big deal.
Why don't you go with Safelite directly? They order OEM parts, and generally do a good job, including all the calibrations. |

Go with Safelite but request that they have their best installer do the install. I had one windshield replacement thru them that was a complete disaster (not my M3)- the windshield leaked, you could see excess adhesive on the inside, and they broke a piece of plastic that held the outer trim piece on properly, which couldn't be replaced without taking the windshield back off.

I had mine done at the dealer in Canada. Usually more expensive for parts and labor up here. Less than half that price. Find another dealer or windshield shop. That’s outrageous.

I've gotten it replaced multiple times at bmw dealerships in multiple states and they were all between 13-1500 total.

I have HUD and camera as well. My dealer quoted me around $1K including replacing the drip rails and top trim. Insurance was to cover it all minus my $100 deductible. Upon pick up, my invoice showed $680 or so as the final price for parts+labor BEFORE my deductible.
So there was a ~50% difference between out-of-pocket vs. insurance-negotiated rates. The price your dealer has quoted you is outrageous by any measure.

That price is outrageous. I also had a crack in the windshield about two weeks ago and have every option (HUD, Driver Assistance, Auto High Beams, etc,) and had everything replaced (OEM glass, rain sensor, seals, trim, etc.) at a BMW Certified Collision Repair Center and the total was ~$1700. Paid my $100 deductible and called it a day. Repair time took a day and if I remember correctly the breakdown between parts and labor was like $1200 / $500.

when they inject resin on windshield small crack, I saw a couple of guys doing it. Talked to them, one was actually an apprentice learning the rope. So insist on an experience guy on windshield replacement for sure. I have rock chips that overnight turn to long crack at rain sensor so I'd need to get my windshield replace soon, my bad luck. |

Does anybody know if the HUD needs to be recalibrated? I just had mine replaced and now my HUD is fuzzy and about a quarter of the right hand side of the HUD can't be seen.

Unclear if this matters as I've read about non-OEM working with HUD and not working as well. I did not need to re-calibrate mine when it was replaced (OEM windshield). |
