Two individual builds here. One Euro Delivery and one stateside. Only difference is the Competition Package on the second build. I say go for it!

If you want a track car and a daily, then go for a used car and build it up. Then get a truck and trailer to tow the thing around. You can get ALL of that for much less than the $80K it would cost you for the new car, and it'd be a helluvanice setup...
If you want to stick with the M platform, get a used E46 - you can get one in very good condition for the low $20s (less good condition for high $10s), spend another $15-20K to convert it to racecar status (engine reinforcement mods, cage, seats, suspension, spare set of wheels, brakes, etc...). Then spend $20K on a nice used American pickup for tow. Reliable, powerful. Spend another $10K on a nice enclosed trailer. There: $40+20+10K = sick setup <$80 new M4. Just my two cents...
