F80 M3 DIY oil change, how hard?

Hey all,

I am picking up my new mistress this weekend and will be driving her 800 miles home. As she is used with 12K miles, I want to change the oil ASAP for peace of mind.

How hard is it to DIY, or should I take it to the dealer?

Do you just drain the oil pan, or suck it out from the dip stick tube? What about the oil cooler?

It’s pretty straightforward, but the oil comes out very fast so be prepared for a bit of a mess. Much faster than any car I have seen before.

Really? I haven't noticed the oil flow rate being different than any of my previous cars.

But yea like others have said it's a super easy job.

The oil does come out very rapidly when the oil cap and oil filter housing cap are removed. I drained the oil first before removing any caps and it kept the flow in check, preventing a huge mess. Very straight forward oil change.

Man, good on BMW for designing in something as easy as a freaking hole in the undertray below the drain plug. After dealing with Audi oil changes for a decade-plus, I'm looking forward to doing this on the M4. As a comparison: accessing the filter and drain plug on the TT RS requires the removal of a plastic undertray held on with thirteen T25 torx screws and the removal of an aluminum undertray held on by eight T30 torx screws as well as a single XZN8 screw, just for spite.

I am surprised there is no oil cooler that needs to be drained as well.

The car has an oil cooler but it does need to be drained seperately. The procedure would be too complex when done correctly as it needs to be pressurized.

If you just would drain it through the hoses at some point you would need to replace the hoses and you will never be able to remove all the oil anyway.

There is no dipstick tube so it isn't possible to suck oil out from the top. Just one drain plug at the oil pan.

This car is very easy to do your own oil changes on, I did mine last week.
