Are we talking about replacing the entire head unit (and losing OEM BMW system / menu), or just an addon to enable Android Auto on the stock HU?

Just an add on. Read bimmer tech's web site and saw their add on. Just wondering if anyone did this and how is it working.

When I put in my VIN (2017 M3) I get this:

Quote:
Android Auto is not compatible with your vehicle.
If you think it might be an error, please email us at info@bimmer-tech.net to check compatibility.
That's unfortunate.

If you have NBTEvo navigation it is possible.
You can write me VIN on pm and I will check it.

If anyone is interested, I am organizing a group buy of an Android Auto/Carplay MMI unit. https://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh...1646810&page=8

I'm several pages in to that thread and just want to double-check: The unit the group buy is for will only work on pre-07/2016 ID4 head units correct?

That's what I gathered from that thread also. I have a 16 with the NBT EVO unit so I don't think the group buy pertains to me unfortunately. There is a link in that thread to another unit someone found on Alibaba that supposedly works with NBT Evo units.

I have a '16, I believe we're on NBT ID4, which I think is what the one from the group buy supports? I'd be interested in one if we can get some clarification...

It depends on your production date. According to THIS chart the switchover from ID4 to ID5 happened in July of 2016. I checked my VIN at http://bimmer.work/ and found my 2016's production date to be 10/15.

Actually even easier, look HERE and compare what your main screen looks like with their pics.

Well the group buy is over but it's on sale so I just bought it for $225 including tax and shipping. Still pretty damn good vs what an Android Auto interface usually runs...

I ordered the one with Big Evo Coding.

EDIT - Just chatted with the seller, apparently the only thing they have for the Evo units is coding service for Carplay, they don't have anything to add Android Auto...

So I found THIS Android MMI unit that the seller confirmed would work with my 10/15 production ID4. In the end though I decided to go a slightly different direction and got THIS unit which replaces the iDrive screen entirely with a 10.25" touchscreen that can go between displaying the regular iDrive and being a stand-alone fully functional Android tablet that'll run everything you could through Android Auto. That includes running Android Auto internally. It can use its own SIM card for data or connect to your phone's hotspot for data.

I can't view the second link you posted without creating an Alibaba account. Please post your thoughts on this after you get it installed. I'm curious to see how it works out for you.

THIS link should work better... I got the 8 core version without the cam. I'll definitely post my impressions when I get it but in the mean time there are these vids that I watched when researching it. They're a bit longer than necessary but you get good info anyway.

I'll be interested to hear your feedback. I put one of these in my previous BMW, and while I was somewhat satisfied with it, it was buggy and annoying at times. Plus, there were always audio issues, which seems to be a problem with almost all of these android auto units.

From what I've read the new Android 9.0 versions are a big improvement. My order just shipped so hopefully I'll be able to give a first-hand review within a few weeks.
