Chime in if you own both an M4 and X3 M Competition

I am a current M4 owner looking to replace my X5 4.8i. I will be keeping my M4. Any feedback from those who own the X3MC and an M4?

X3M and X4M is a compromise for ride quality. It leans more into a SUV ride than that of a M3 or M4. The X3M/X4m suspension is just a pillow in comparison to a F80/F82. I had to shove the engine setting and suspension setting to Sport+ on the X3M and X4M to get it close to that of my Macan S in feel.

If you want a car closer to that of a M3 or M4, go for Porsche's Macan S/GTS/Turbo. The only downside (and it's a pretty big one depending on who you ask) with the Macan, even the newest one, is the trunk is isn't as spacious, rear seat is way more comfy in X3M and X4M and the infotainment is miles better in the BMW. You can bypass the infotainment problem with Apple Careplay now a days but you cannot say so with the rear seats and the trunk space.

Macan's are also gas hogs. The V6 is very gas hungry, were as the BMW's I6 is better gas wise.

@Arcades That's the biggest issue I have. I must have enough cargo space to get my two dogs crates in and the Macans, Glc 63, jaguar svr, and alfa stelvio quadrifoglio just don't have enough cargo space. This suv will be my new daily dog hauler and I'm still debating btwn the X3MC, Gle 580 or the X5 M50i. The X5 M50i was nice but is just huge even compared to my older x5 4.8i. The Gle 580 hasn't been released and I've never owned a Mercedes.

The thing is, the newer X5 feels bigger but it isn't so big where it would be overwhelming.

When it comes to cars, you just need to see it in person to get a better feel of it. Macan, for the most part, can fit most everything you want in it. The rear seats can fit 3 but it isn't comfortable for the 3rd. X5 can easily do this and not make the person feel like he's being bunched in.

If space is a priority than the X3M Comp would be a better fit. Or even go for the X3 M40i and save the $$.

Are you sure? My wife and I have owned 3 Macans (two S’ and a GTS) and they got reasonably good MPG. The ratings on the x3/4M are well worse. The Macan is 17/23 (and we did slightly better than that) and the x3/4M are rated at 14/19.

I test drove a X3 M340i for my wife and while straight line acceleration was good, it felt like a big/high/heavy SUV.

I'd love to have a X3M as a daily though.

I currently have a 2018 X5M and 2018 M3CS. I considered selling my wife's X5M for the X3MC, as it's overkill for her, but the X3MC was underwhelming for me, power delivery, interior, stance/presence. You would love the X5M!

never got into the fast suv thing. seems like a waste.

im just going by basic MSRP but:
- M3 (70k) + X3M (70k) = $140k

i'd rather just go 911 (100k) + X3 base (40k) . comfy SUV with a large profile tire. and a real sports car.

Why not both?
Lambo Urus ($200k) + GT3 ($150k) = $350k. Who doesn't have that kind of money nowadays? :

I plan to get an X3 M40i with my M3.

M40i surprised me by how fun and capable it was when I had it as a loaner. It set my expectation high for the X3 M.

Then I drove the X3 M and it was underwhelming. M40i is all I need given the pricing difference. I was hoping X3 M comp would be much more exciting with sounds and speed. It not.

Or you can sell both and get an M5 comp. That car blew me away. It’s on the next level.

Sorry been busy.

I mean of course it kind of depends on a lot of factors too. Your driving style, how long your drive is etc. For the most part though, V6 is hungrier than the I6. I get better mileage on my M3 than I do on the Macan S if I drive the same direction.

Maybe the S55 is better with this than the S58, I'm not sure but in my personal experience my Macan S eats way more than my M3.

There is something about the X3M or X4M that doesn't feel completely... like a M? For me, it might be mostly the settings are spaced so far apart that changing them doesn't feel like it changes the car enough. My Macan S has fixed suspension, so I'm used to the slightly rougher ride (slightly lol :P) driving the X3M and X4M, feeling almost nothing on the comfort setting than barely feeling anything on even Sport+ suspension mode doesn't give me a good feel for the car. The car also has a ZF Auto but BMW decided to set it up to imitate the M-DCT in certain ways (the way you shift for example) does annoy me a little. Like they are trying to pass it off like it's something it isn't. It could be my personal misgivings though.

I would honestly take the X4 M40i or the X4M if chance comes and I end up switching my cars around a bit. Like the new 992. I just... have so many annoyances with the shifter but everything else is good. I just hope the new GT3 doesn't have that shifter. Have a few years to figure it out though. Going through escrow and what not ties down my fiances a bit for now.

Hard to compare a 4200 lbs Macan S/GTS in MPG to a 3600-3700 lbs M3 (and it makes sense the M3 would be better on MPG) but I think if you compare Macan S/GTS/turbo to X3M the Macan is more fuel efficient. My 991.2S and 991.2T are both much more fuel efficient than my m3 or m4 were, but again, part of that is the 911 is 400 lbs lighter so hard to compare. The x3/4M are quite bad on MPG from what it seems though. I was in one and agree it didn’t make me want to have one.

Mecan is still and SUV, it will not handle like an M4. ... and maintenance is not free for three years in fact it will cost you a few limbs. also the power is nowwhere near that of the X3m even in the TT PP.

We have an '18 GLE 43 AMG. It fits two dog crates for German Shepherds. I know Mercedes hasn't launched the GLE580 yet which I think is the comparable for the one I have, but what I can tell you is that the Mercedes is nice, capable, sounds okay. I like BMW better, but my wife like the Merc.

+1

Or mod up the m3 instead of getting a 911
