DCT gearbox problem

Hello!

In last copule of weeks I noticed strange behavior of my car. I experience strange jerk when car starts to move - only in 1st gear only in Auto mode at around 20km/h ( 15mph ) and only in D1 setting - not during gear change - it happens long before change to 2nd gear.

In any other setting ( D2, D3, manual... ) everything is smooth.

I have this car over 1 year and I noticed this problem few weeks ago for the first time.

I know that DCT gearbox jerks often but this happens not during gear change, but when car starts to move on 1st gear.

Is there any way to fix this? Should I be worried about my gearbox condition?

Sorry for my bad English!

Regards,
Chris

Have you had the firmware in your car updated recently? I started experiencing the same issue after my dealer updated the software back in January. When taking off in auto d1 there is a noticeable jerk right before 2nd gear. It is really annoying and I am hoping a newer software update fixes the issue.

Also, my car overall just seems a lot worse in the d1 auto setting. A lot more clicks, pops, and bangs from the transmission. Especially, at low speed or when coming to a stop. Are you experiencing that as well?

I am actually very upset. I’m bringing my car back in soon to see if a new software released in March can fix the issue.

I updated software few days ago but this problem exist from at least few weeks. After update problem is the same as before.

I dont hear any clicks, pops and bangs from transmission. It jerks often when reducing from 3 gear to 2 and when car starts to move on D1.

Im not sure if its normal... Probably I will try to use GTS software

Exact same thing is happening to mine, which I picked up from the dealer last week. I figured it has to be something in the software, but haven't brought it in to the service department yet.

Hate to highjack here but....

What is an acceptable level of noise from the transmission. With windows up and radio off, I hear click, click, click, from the trans then bang from the rear every time I come to a stop in auto mode? Is this correct for the dct?

I flashed to GTS DCT and it fixed that annoyance. One of the best mods to get along with all the coding done by Alex @ AlpineMS.

Awesome, I was curious to see if that would fix the issue.

So I shouldn't worry about my dct gearbox condition? Its just software problem and it will not damage anything?

The M4 GTS and regular M4 have the same DCT hardware. It's all software. It is slightly disappointing to know your car has that level of potential all from better tuning of the DCT, Traction Control, Steering, etc.

I had the same done. I'm guessing the DCT flashes are similar , but Alex flashed mine last year and it was sooo much better. Before it felt like driving with someone who didn't know how downshift properly . I've had Alex and now Bootmod3 GTS transmission flash and can't tell a difference in how they perform. I assume there isn't really a particular difference performance wise, but its worth it just to get rid of the herky jerky.

Can confirm this.... I just flashed to the GTS tune today, and the car is smooth as can be now. So much better. Kinda disappointing that the fix is that easy and this isn't an option as a solution from BMW.

You can't flash to a GTS DCT from the dealer. All the software updates the dealers can do either remedies it slightly or makes it worse. GTS flash is the solution as it increases clamping force. Actually is better on the clutch since less feathering. You will have to go w/ a coder (like Alex @ Alpine) or tuner (ECU flash like BM3, BPMSport, Alex @ Alpine) to get it done.

less slip is always better for transmission longevity

Maybe for clutch longevity, but I am sure smashing into gear time and time again does have an effect on the transmission itself.

there's no smashing anything LOL. maybe you're talking about U joints/CV/guibo, etc. I don't know anything that shifts that hard except the old planetary autos with modified valvebodies in domestic cars.

Yeah I seem to have the same concern with mine. Some people are telling me its normal because its a DCT but I have never experienced this in any other sports car. Wondering if I should have it checked.

Are you sure it is from the DCT and not the differential? The sound you describe is reminescent of the e-diff clutches in action and it is normal.
