He mentioned 2011, so I had to look it up. Pretty sure this is him. I'm sure he had to check his undershorts after this save at 0:53.

I'll never understand why people sit so close to the road at these events. No way I'd be that close.

This type of racing seems to be from another era, surprising it is still happening today. Those guys rock .

Somehow stage rallying never took of in north America. WRC is so big in Europe and so much fun, you look forward to going up the mountain to get as close to the action as possible, risks be damned!

I think the problem is finding a proper venue in the US, but even worse is our litigious society and safety consciousness.

We have been trying to do a Street Survival event in the Austin area for over three years, but cannot find a location because of people's fear of lawsuits or insurance hassles

Yeah probably true, but I think also it is about most people not willing to go up the hills and mountains standing rain, snow, shine on their feet to watch cars go by in a sport that they cannot relate since no American muscle involved. Maybe I am oversimplifying it.

Amazing you cannot find a place around Austin for Street Survival. How about COTA? I am sure they have large skid pad or some sort of asphalt besides their circuit, no?

We could get COTA, but not for an affordable price. We even tried to do it during our Texas Trifecta, but was not doable

This is a problem playing out everywhere around the country. Locally here we lost a great site numerous clubs have used for years (old airport) for autocrosses and street survival events, and the current owners are not going to allow anyone back on the property. Fortunately NCCAR track took its place on the schedule twice a year, but it's a pretty long haul for most in the club.

North Carolina car insurance regulations have prevented insurance companies from banning coverage for track events or autocrosses since forever as all companies are required to use the same policy language. THAT all changed in 2013 when they now *require* all companies selling "normal" car insurance policies to eliminate all comp/collision coverage for track/autox and to limit liability coverage to some small amount that is a fraction of the policy limit (think it's $60k) for track events and zero liability coverage for an autocross. Note that having an umbrella policy doesn't help since it will only kick in when the max limits for the car policy are hit which is prevented from happening by the special case $60k limit -- they've covered the ***es well.

This whole new policy language is being tested in the courts now since the instructor death at Summit Point last year was in a car covered by an NC policy.

So many states have limited or no coverage now for cars used for HPDE/autox/etc that few seem to understand the live long financial risks they are putting themselves and their families at risk of experiencing. "Track" policies that the CCA promotes, etc, *only* cover damage to your car (and hence the reason they sell them), but nobody is selling personal liability coverage which in the worst case event is by far the biggest issue. The "waivers" everyone signs have been ruled in court to be invalid in cases of gross negligence. I suppose that aspect will be tested in the Summit Point case also.

Sorry for the thread-jack -- it's been far too long since the days of $35 weekday CCA NCC track days at Summit Point.

I wouldn't even have the balls to sit int he passenger seat!

What's crazy is that usually in videos, it looks a lot slower than how it feels like when you are in the car. But in this one, everything is a blur. Amazing

So true. In North America we have a culture where we remove all responsibility from the individual a push it on "the system". I prefere the European culture where the responsibility lies with the individual taking the risk.
