Yes. If it is bad enough, the chassis goes in a sort of limp mode an locks the dampers in full stiff with a big iDrive message.

EDC works perfectly fine with lowering springs as long as the spring rates fall within the EDC damping margins. Springs rates that are poorly matched to the EDC will likely not throw a code or fault, but will yield suboptimal handling. When BMW released the MP-HAS they also introduced an iStep change to even further optimize EDC with a lowered setup, so it is worthwhile to have your car's software upgraded if you have an older model.
