It's all about economy and keeping up with the rest of the industry ... in the end it equates to "All about the Money"
For what it is worth, I drove a Z4 35i twin turbo and liked it very much, I would not mind having it in my M3 not at all

With BMW committed to turbocharging from here on out - this is not only the new M3 engine, but likely the end of the n54/n55 also. "V" is just a better config for turbos than "I". It'll improve reliability, cooling, lag and take up less longitudinal engine bay space. No reason to think their 6-cylinder lineups will be any different than the N63/S63
Yeah, you could say they sold out on their heritage - but times have changed and fuel regulations have changed. BMW wants to maintain efficiency, but still leads the performance game. Any other ideas?

V6 engine for the M3 is the worst idea I ever heard (that is, after RFT tires and electric power steering). Its simply an inferior layout from a balance point of view. I'd much prefer to see an inline-6 engine being used. That is the best way to make a smooth engine with a nice exhaust sound. V6 engines generally don't sound the best.
If not an inline-6, they should simply drop in the turbo V8 from the M5 - End of topic! |

Honda NSX does not sound nice? Alfa 156 GTA does not sound nice? Remember, today the M3's V6 will be the only in the world to be at 90° instead of 60°. Done rightly a 90° V6 can be as smouth as an I6, downside is more complexity and thus slightly more weight, but due to short length of the engine, thes downsides can be negated.

No I'm not a fan of the Alfa V6 sound. Like the NSX they only start to sound decent when then get to 7000RPM. To me they don't sound any better than a 4 cylinder.

I think BMW should stick with the inline six.
The should also change the M5 to a straight eight, because straight eights are better balanced than V8s! |

Thank God! The i6 platform has many advantages over a V6 platform and I'm glad BMW realized this and I hope they never go the V6 route. At this point, I seriously doubt it. The I6 is just too good.
