The "fart" sound has nothing to do with V6 or Inline-6 but is related to the DME which electronically mixes fuel with air and sends it to the combustion chamber which in turns sends that thru the exhaust, half-aspiration and half induction. It works on ANY BMW post 1984.

I see so many posts on both the M5 and the future M3 of people concerned with how it sounds... Remember the people that will hear the sound are the people behind you, not so much yourself (except when firing up the engine).

Having said that I will be going from a C63 to the new M3 (most likely) and there is going to be a huge sound difference when firing up the car and taking off but I doubt it will stop me from making the switch, especially if performance is similar and MPG is a 50% improvement (I am getting 15 mpg) and a turbo 6 whatever should get in the low 20s combined cycle.

I think the only thing that could stop me from buying the next M3 is a big price increase (like over $75K loaded) or if the new Mercedes CLA AMG has amazing numbers, still years away from that, but rumor is AWD and if they use a turbo V8 in it, that thing would haul ass and be the best looking small 4 door car out there.

That's the sweet sound of a twin turbo v6 setup. Love it!

I think they could surprise us with a V6 setup, not I6. Am I right in saying it would be BMW's first V6 if it were true? I love the I6 though, sounds so awesome in petrol or diesel form and is the only naturally balanced engine setup along with the V12. I believe...

I was at the car wash yesterday and had a rare treat - my e92 M3 came out behind a C63 AMG and in front of an Audi RS5.

The AMG sounded, as Jeremy Clarkson said best, "Like an axe murderer" as it pulled away - so beastly. Its snorted to life and growled down the road.

I waited for the RS5 to pull in front of me and, of the 3, it sounded the most tame.

I echo your sentiment on the superior sound of the AMG cars but, after driving a few examples (C63, S63, and CL65), I prefer the driver involvement and feel of the M cars. I think the award for aesthetics goes to the RS5 but, at the end of the day, its all subjective and they all represent great options for a true enthusiast.

Assuming BMW maintains the driver DNA in the next generation models (F10 M5 and F30 M3), they'll continue to get my money regardless of the grunt bellowing from the exhaust. IMHO, sound is an easy fix whereas feel is something that has to be engineered into the chassis.

Not slamming above poster but is everyone on here only concerned about the car exterior sound? Really??

So if it sounds different than the the S65 will you refuse to buy it.

The comments about how a car sound are getting ridiculous.

I mean really, this car could be the best M3 ever, better than the E90, better thant the E46 What if, but then it doesnt sound "good". Are you gonna go get an RS4?

+1 million

If you want a car to sound better buy an aftermarket exhaust and be done. If you want it to handle better, stop better, feel better and be balanced good luck and open your wallet- might as well buy a better car from the start. That is what an M is.

These exhausts are not final yet- they go through an elaborate tuning process for sound resonance and the are evaluated.

When I am spending this much money on a car, I expect not only good performance numbers but also a good driving experience. Sound does matter, otherwise why would BMW spend so much time and money on developing that engine sound synthesizer for their M5.

Just like great steering feel, handling, and brakes----great sounds coming from the engine and exhaust can make the driver feel more involved and put a smile on your face.

I'll buy an E92 and maybe pick up the F30 as it evolves. Def do not want a first or second year model run of that car. I think BMW will do some major improvements latter on down the line..

I hope you're right and that they continue tuning the exhaust note all the way up to production. If I'm going to drop nearly $80,000 on a car, I don't want it sound like the fartbox in that video.

just remember, normally with great sound comes great expense (12/18 MPG on the C63 and with premium fuel at $4.50 right now, it starts to add up fast).
