A shop quoted me $700 so I said DIY time and got the special skinny socket and a meter of 10mm ID silicone tubing, NGK plugs and a gap set. Easy job as long as you can follow along with the videos.

One foot cut of silicone tube makes a tool to easily spin the plugs out/in the threads (dads trick). The rest of the tubing is used with a shop vac to suck any debris out of the plug holes BEFORE removing the plug. Torque new plugs to 26 Newton meters, as per my BMW mechanic (not 23).

i did my own and while you're there you might as well swap charge pipes just because you have to take them off anyways if you haven't upgraded. it took me a couple of hours but very rewarding to diy.

Did plugs and coils, took me about 4.5 hours (with lunch break). Not difficult, just tedious removing all the braces and plastic pieces to get to the plugs. Should have done charge pipes while I was in there!

Hate how there are so many inconsistencies on what the correct torque specs are. I'm assuming your car has been running fine at 26 NM? I was told to under torque them to 20 NM. Also, is this the tube you are speaking of?

@gosutony yep, that's the tubing. No probs with the plugs so far. The reason that the BMW mechanic said 26Nm was because he's torqued plugs to BMW spec at 23Nm and pulled them right away, and the crush washers weren't fully crushed. He said at 26Nm the washers crushed properly. My gaps are 0.021" and no probs with Paul E85 tuning.

What spark plugs are you guys using for stage 2 91octane and 93octane BM3 tunes? OEM or 2 steps colder(NGK97506)? What spark plug gap size for pump 91/93 and 100 octane? I don't plan to run E85 just pump 91/93 and 100 octane custom tunes...

Stock plugs are fine for you. None of the BM3 OTS tunes require "colder" plugs, even the race gas and E30 Stage 2 maps. The stock plugs come gapped about 0.032" but I would take that down to 0.025 for your situation when swapping. If your car runs fine with the plugs as they are now then leave them alone until swap time (30K intervals).

Only if custom tuning E85 to high boost might you need the NGKs gapped to 0.021". Even F80Paul told me stock plugs are fine for most of his tunes but gap 21 is his spec. I do have NGKs installed and a set of F8S on the bench. Custom tunes get plug swaps every 15K.

That's good to hear. I was about to buy the colder ngk plugs for my 100octane custom tune... Anybody know the proper gap size?

I have oem spark plugs gapped to 0.018 running on BM3 OTS E30 Map and find it works marginally better than gapped to 0.022. The higher rpm feels slightly stronger and also the cold ignition start up seems almost instant on 0.018
