Yes. That is exactly it, and it is not normal. If it only does it when cold and would therefore be difficult to replicate during a short service visit, play the video for the foreman during your visit so they can understand the issue at hand. Then go from there.

the Valvetornic motor is a 400$ part..
But, looks like bmw has been using this motor for the whole lifecycle of the S55, and it hasnt changed as of 2/18.. Heck its the same motor used in thousands of N55 motors aswell. to really pinpoint the issue you can just unplug the valvetronic motor when it is clicking. How is everyones battery level with the clicking noise? Seems to be energy related. Since the motor is actually working and not throwing CEL and the car is performing, hence the motor is opening and closing the valve correctly to throttle relation.

work done early March '18. Noise is identical to the vids others have posted. Except now it has a more electronic type noise to it from time to time.

Edit: It doesn't look easy to unplug the Valvetronic motor itself. The wiring runs directly to the DME and I don't see a convenient disconnect anywhere under the engine cover. My battery level is nominal since it's new and I drive the car every day. Last edited by FlyingLow78; 04-27-2018 at 10:53 PM.. |

Removing the second cover is annoying and would have to remove the chargepipes to remove the cover.. Both of these covers can be left over, so not only can you go to the dealer like that, but as soon as the clicking starts in front of the tech, you can just pull the plug to prove that the noise stops when the valvetronic plug is pulled.

I also provide them videos of my issue and even told them about this thread. Still no action taken. Will be waiting for it to get worst before I can bring it in. |

After 4 dealer visits and 10 months, my dealer finally took care of this (well just got it back, I'll see if the noise is gone)
I'll attach the work order |

Don't forget to come back and update us if replacing the valvetronic motor resolves the noise.
Mine has done this many times but not in the last few months. It's so weird. |

I hear ticking in the morning once started only. Goes away 3 mins later. Sounds like its coming from that area. However, mine does not sound like that with the car off. Only once overnight started.

My 2017 M3 ZCP has been doing this for awhile, although it's completely random and unpredictable when it will do it. The only constant is that it happens after sitting overnight when you first open the door.
My question is -- is the noise benign? While obviously not desirable -- especially on an $80k car -- is it symptomatic of an issue that, if left unresolved, will get worse or will lead to some other failure? I'm trying to figure out how hard to fight with the dealer to try to get this resolved. |

I would suggest you record it on your phone. I did this and eventually the dealer got it fixed. It took at least two visits and they logged a call with BMW tech support. My advice is that it's not benign (saying that I dont profess to be an expert). You car shouldn't do this. Next time you come to the car have your iphone camera ready to film. My car used to start the clicking just as I opened the door. It was very intermittent.

Dammit. Just saw this and checked my 18 zcp and there it was....i would've never thought to listen for it until now. Opened the door, popped the hood and heard the clicking for approximately 1-2min while taking a video. I have 6700 mi on it. Sounds like everyone is having a tough time getting this replaced on the first try.
