BMW F80 Rear Seat Cup Holder Mod

Hello Fellow BMW Junkies. Popping my cherry with this thread. I did some research on this forum regarding the lack of M3 cup holders in the back and the best thing I found was the ridiculous BMW back seat dufflebag with cup holders that goes between the two backseat passengers. I was determined to find something else and I did. It's called Plug-N-Chug Console Ashtray Cup Holder Insert from a 1968 Mercury Cougar ($40)

https://secure.cougarpartscatalog.com/19plcoin.html

It takes a little modification but I think it matches the interior and fits perfect in that gap. I've had a few people say it looks stock. I found a few other units that fit in the gap but they were too tall and didn't allow for access to the seat warmers and 12v outlet. You will need to do some modification to the unit by taking the two screws out of the bottom and separating the two halves. Save the two black wooden blocks as I used one under the unit on the side closest to the seat to level it out (not present in the final pics as you can see the holder tilts a little. Also had to cut the block to make it thinner but you can use almost anything to shim it. Also, used 3M 10lb velcro from home depot to secure. Drove 3hrs with 2 water bottle in the holders and they didn't budge. Definitely a better option than the BMW duffle-bag. Downside is the cup holders are not large but will fit standard water bottles and 12 oz cans but if you want to put a Bubba Cup or Yeti thermos it won't fit... Better than nothing. The pics are pretty self explanatory but let me know if you have any questions.

Seems useful, but I am not putting anything thing in my car that signals people that it's ok to eat or drink in my car. There's no reason for having cupholders in this car.

There are lots of reasons to have cup holders. One of which, when you taking a client out to lunch that spends $250K/mo with your company and he has a bottle of water with him. I'm going to tell him I don't allow drinking in my car? That just happened to me and the guy just put the water bottle between his legs. Nothing spilled but if it did, it wouldn't be the end of the world. I love my M3 but lets face it, it's a car and shit is going to happen to it.

If he’s spending $250k with your company, Uber Black.

Lol. A client of that importance I don't trust other people to drive him around when he's in town, personal attention is the key. Funny enough, the last time he requested to be picked up in my Jeep. Lots of cup holder in my JK!

Cute mod and nice clean execution but IMHO does not look OEM at all. Why is your VIP client sitting in the back, I guess front passenger seat is taken? BTW did you try pulling the Velcro and see what happens to your carpet

In the M4, there’s a handy tray between the rear seats that I’ve used to put water bottles there. Does the M3 have it?

No, the M3 is all cushion. Even has a somewhat hideaway full seatbelt that can be used.

Impressive workmanship!

I was anticipating this thread to have a hacked up backseat in an attempt to make an M4ish type compartment.

M3 doesn't have it as the M3 is a five-passenger sedan and the M4 is a four-passenger coupe. The M3 also has an additional seat belt in the rear for the middle rear seat passenger.

Wow, lots of interest in my client..lol. The boss sat in the front and another employee sat in the back. Same company though. I'm not planning on removing the cup holder so not concerned about what the carpet looks like. It's just a sticker to the carpet so I'm sure it would peel up fine. Mission accomplished!

NEXT MISSION---- Find a suitable area to store a firearm!

nice idea, one problem, velcro will not hold a bottle of water and they will flip over together.

(i did similar in my e30)

it is necessary to add side support

I wish the m4 had the ski pass thru and that flip down middle arm rest with the pop out cup holders like on the e92. It makes the rear seat experience more polished and comfortable.

You ordered the exact same thing I did? You didn't use the right or a large enough piece of velcro or put the shims on the end. I've had 2 water bottles in there and taken exit ramps at 60 and they haven't fallen over.

It does but then you loose the 3rd seat which is why I posted this for people that don't have the center piece.

Just FYI, for anyone else that would like to do this mod, the original product is out of stock, but I contacted the company selling it, asking if another similar product they sell would work, and got confirmation that this product is the same size: https://secure.cougarpartscatalog.com/71pnccuphldr.html

Here's the copied text of my email exchange with their support department:

Quote:
Hi, I recently came across this thread that describes using one of your products to make a backseat cupholder in a BMW: https://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1465163

I noticed the product linked in that post (https://secure.cougarpartscatalog.com/19plcoin.html) is out of stock, but I also found this product that looks similar: https://secure.cougarpartscatalog.com/71pnccuphldr.html

Can you tell me the differences in those cup holders? Are the dimensions available?

I want to make sure it will fit before placing an order.
Quote:
both cupholders are the same dims. they just bolted on different bis on the bottom, take those, off, add the velcro and you are Golden. Happy Motoring Dean.
