Shifter Surround Melted

I'm currently in the market for an M4 and have found one I'm definitely interested in. Issue from just looking at pictures is that the DCT shifter surround trim looks melted.

Anyone have this happen/know what could cause this? I'm less concerned with the cost to fix it but feel as though it could be complete negligence of the vehicle if this isn't related to a common issue.

Do you park outside in the sun alot? I've seen that shit start peeling on a manual shifter knob in a black e91 that was always parked outdoors in the sun and very rarely driven, but that's about it.

Great time to get the alcantara/carbon one to replace it...

Not normal. It would be very odd if this was melted and I would worry about other damage if it were hot enough to melt that plastic. It could be poor plating of the plastic that can come from poor surface preparation prior to painting or finishing.

It is hard to say, but I think you need to understand if it is melted or just peeling.

I'm wondering if original owner wrapped in vinyl.

That's what I'm thinking too- especially with the center trim being white and not CF, it's possible the previous owner had it wrapped and hit it with the heat gun for too long.

Had a similar issue but not that bad on my previous M4. I had no interior mods on that car. I was really surprised it happened. BMW replaced it under warranty.

Spoke to SA and he said it's from AZ weather (car doesn't have tint which makes me question the condition of the leather) and that it has since been replaced. Thanks guys.

I live in west Texas were temperatures frequently exceed 100*. Even in the first couple weeks I had my car (no tint, outside, no shade) I don't see how this is possible. Must be vinyl wrap or some freak occurrence

Yes AZ sun is capable of melting interior trim. It happened a while ago to my aftermarket e46 m3 shifter trim when parking in AZ sun all day during summer with tintless windows

Did the issue reoccur after replacement?

I just do not see that.

None of the other trim in car was melted.

And given that there were no other reports of duct surround trim melting (or other models like the F3x made of essentially the same material, that just seems improbable.

Now if you want to talk about of the door handles melting.....

Bad case of a wrapping job. The color is not original the same with the center console trim.

Yes, I was comparing that earlier. It's too silver without the depth.

My lease ended shortly after replacing it. Hopes, it doesn't recur on my current M4 cs. I didn't tint both cars..

I have a manual with an aluminum aftermarket knob. I parked the car in the New England sun one day for about three hours. When I got back into the car, the knob was extremely hot to the touch. So much so that I had a hard time keeping my hand on it long enough to make a shift. If I wasn’t touching it with my own hands, I’d have a hard time believing it was possible to get that hot.

That’s my long winded way of saying that I’m not surprised at all that plastic pieces would deform from being in direct sunlight for extended periods of time.
