1200 Mile Service

Good morning fellow M3/M4 owners,

I wanted to put out a feeler to get a little feedback from UK owners who have been through the 1200 mile service. I have an American spec M4 that I ordered/purchased through BMW Military Sales, and she is now due for her 1200 mile service. I called a local BMW dealership to find out how long the service would take and how much it would cost me (I was told that the warranty doesn't apply in Europe). I was quoted 340 pounds and roughly two hours of work. This seems a little steep to me, so I was curious what others were quoted/paid. I'm also curious what additional work is done besides changing the oil. If any UK owners can chime in and provide some insight, I would appreciate it.

£340 for a service from BMW sounds about right.

Seems its the engine and diff oil thats changed. I'd also hope, that a full check of the car is completed, which is handy as after the service you'll have access to 430hp.

Is the car limited to less than 430ps before the service?

I believe the car is limited until after the first service. I borrowed an M4 last weekend and it had 60 miles on the clock. Salesman said it wouldn't be as fast and smooth as it would after the 1200 mile service but it'd still give me a very good idea. I didn't press him for details but assume it was restricted in some way.

The car is not limited before the service, there is no unlocking of extra power, a new engine is tight it's natural for it to loosen up during the first few thousand miles.

Yes the 1200 mile service is in the £300 range.

Simply look at the dealerships within your travel range, call each up and see who will give you best price! I reckon you will be able to barter to £300.

The engine oil, filter, sump plug plus diff oils are changed. The car gets a full inspection with print out. Launch control is also activated.

Also explain that your car is US spec. I can't see this making any difference.

One thing that might interest you is that the MDM modes between the US and Euro spec are different. The Euro spec is far more enjoyable and doesn't cut the traction control in as early, lots of owners in US have the Euro spec coded in.
So maybe worth asking if the dealership will kindly code in the Euro spec Mdm etc.

Cant see there been anything else you need to know or worry about.

Agree with this, don't think there's a magic +100hp update applied.

LC gets enabled though I Believe?

I checked by invoice for the running in service today, £263 so £340 is high.

Just rang up my local dealer to try and get an early heads up on the first service cost.
Couldn't give me an exact figure as they need the reg number. All they could say that it would be "between £200 and £300", but that don't mean nought till I get a reg number.

Nar don't do enough miles (or keep it long enough!) to make it pay.

£1100 is a bit steep.

1200 miles service today, after saying to the service desk do not drive, wash, clean and so on 2 hours later I have the car back, the report covers engine oil drain and refill, gearbox top up and diff drain and service, there is a transit power reduction on delivery, which is already unlocked and now LC is activated, so there is as Wills2 mentioned no hidden power gain, it's about being sensible on the run in and removal of run in oils, driving home I feel no diffrence other than full revs beyond 5.5k, however still a lot of fun

No comment made on spacers or CG Valve controller which I left on for service

Gone are the days of the running in service being complementary then? Remember on my E46s they used to be. Glad I negotiated the service plan with my new car!!

I got the service plan, but I always thought the 1200 mile one was FOC?! Certainly was with my E46, although that was 12yrs ago of course.

Just doesn't seem right, as it's BMW who have arguably 'engineered' this service requirement in, as part of just getting it to a state of being fit for purpose!

I had a quote for mine from Stratstone in Hull and they said it would cost £311.66 for the run in service.
