Cup 2s or PS4s for every day driving
I am close to needing a new set of tires. I am considering switching to PS4s for everyday driving (spring and summer mostly.) I definitely don’t want to be caught in a rain storm with the cup 2s.
Has anyone made that switch with the gts? Cup 2s have been great so far but I was able to mostly avoid heavy rain until now... Probably would get a separate set of wheels on different rims if I wanted to go back to the track. Last edited by jpdchicago; 03-27-2021 at 09:49 AM.. |

Thanks all your responses so far. It seems like a clear choice.
Hopefully there is a setup that works for the gts. Probably the same as the M4 CS. I will check it out. |

FWIW PS4S are the way to go, but don't get PS4 (they are two different tires). Just wanted to make sure you were aware given everyone's punctuation. I've been driving PS4S for ~6k miles and they've been great with the crazy rain storms in TX. F: 265/35/19 (tried 275's in the front but didn't fit at full lock because of the .4" of larger sidewall) R: 295/30/20 (I did go up from the 285 rears and it's been fine) Last edited by ClubsportJunkie; 03-28-2021 at 02:04 PM.. |

For some reason I thought the CS had the 19 and 20 rim setup as well. |

While I do not own a GTS, my M4cs came with the PSC2. Since I already have a dedicated set of wheels and tires for the dry track, I figured I'd replace the PSC2 when worn with PS4S since I really needed DD tires and wet track tires.
However, when my PSC2 finally needed to be replaced, I decided to stick with the PSC2 instead of switching to PS4S. After daily driving the PSC2 and using them as wet track tires for two years I really got to appreciate them. They are far from being that bad in the wet as so many people claim. I've driven them through rather heavy rain without issue on roadtrips. On a rather intensly wet track day, they performed so well to the point where I was one of the fastest cars on track. And they raise the notch in driving enjoyment on a dry road, rewarding with a much more precise a direct connection than the PS4S or PSS. For sure they are a tad noisier, but I do not mind that. And they do struggle for grip when it is cold AND wet. But I am willing to accept those tradeoffs for the better driving experience they provide.

+1 to various Cup 2 specs being just fine in the rain, including BMW star spec, Porsche N spec. I've run both in very wet conditions on & off track.
Broken record on this point, Cup performance reputation, inconsistency of driver feedback is due to widely varying designs and specifications. But for daily purposes, comfort, maximum wet traction as priorities, I would fit PS4S. Depending upon how in tune you are with the GTS, you may perceive some loss in handling sharpness. I exchanged Trofeo R for PS4S on another platform and it was a substantial drop in precision, immediate and clear sense of tires being behind the chassis, even just around town and on back roads. Not quite apples to apples, but the same principle applies -- motorsport platforms are developed and at their best synced with equally purposeful tires. In the case of the GTS, it comes even more alive when matched with a more aggressive tire than the star spec Cup 2. Transfer every bit of that chassis competence to the pavement and create consistent connection back to the driver. Every step backward in tire aggressiveness (deeper tread depths, higher void ratio) dulls this process.

I've run both. For PS4S, you should run 265/35/19 and 295/30/20 in the rear. No fitment issues at all.
PSC2 are fine in the rain but if you are not tracking the car, it's a waste of money. |

Good to know. I have another car at the track but I still enjoy how sharp the gts is on the road. Tough one. |

Gonna make it near unanimous and recommend PS4S for your intended usage. There's a significant improvement in comfort with negligible difference in street capabilities.
The PS4S is 'squdgier' than the Sport Cups though, so I guess if you want the feeling of zero give on hard cornering, then go get PSC2. I also like the looks of PSC2 much better. PSC2 has better detailing of the Michelin logo and has that sharper edge that fills out a wheel well so much better! |

I will do a little bit more thinking but after reading this thread over a few times I am now thinking about cup 2s again. I will double check and make sure the thread is the cup 2 BMW * spec thread as mentioned by “FormulaMMM”. Sure enjoying driving the Gts to work again with the warmer temperatures... PS4S will last 4x as long as Cup 2s and there is no difference in anything short of sustained driving on the limit, where the PSC2 won't get greasy and PS4S will. And PS4S are better in rain. You can get the satin sidewall on either tire. |
