Used M4 CP or New M2C?

Hello,

I currently drive a GTI and would like to get either an M4 or an M2 in manual. I talked to a local BMW dealer and was told that ordering the M2 CP I want will take about 18 to 24 months till delivery. Originally, I was going to wait till the new gen M4 comes out in the next few years but with the M2 CP, I'm not sure what to do. For around 60k before tax, I can either get a used M4 CP or a new M2 CP. Or should I just wait till the next gen M4 to come out and get it then (who knows when it will be available fore sure)?

Options:
1) Buy a used 2018 M4 CP
2) Order an M2 CP and wait 18 to 24 months till delivery
3) Just wait for the new gen M4

Thanks in advance!

What dealership is quoting 18-24 months?? Wtf? The options, colors, packages, are slim on the M2C. The dealership probably doesn't want to sell you a M2C and get you into something more expensive.

If you really want a M2C and it's because of the lol2years wait, you can most definitely call around to other neighboring states for a MY20 M2C with delivery in the summer. You'll still only be paying your home states tax, so the extra drive to pick it up will be worth it compared to the wait time of 2 years.

Hop on over to the Cars for lease/purchase thread on the M3/4 forum. There's always users putting up their cars for sale.

Edit: also wanted to add, I also was in the same situation as you. Since I'm planning on keeping this car for a long time, the tipping point was that the interior of a 4 is much nicer than that of a 2 series and that'll go a long way for me to keep it around longer than if I were to see nothing but plastic-y bits in a the M2C interior (ie. full leather option+HUD).

I guess I will speak to more dealers. Also, is it even a good time to get a F82 M4 at the moment knowing it's gonna be discontinued within the next few years?

The G8x M4 is still 2-3 years out I believe.

Only you can make the decision that you'll be completely satisified to not be discouraged when the G8x comes out if you buy a F80. But that comes with anything that comes to consumer products, there'll always be something better in some aspect that could make what you have now feel inferior.

You'll probably get a great discount on a MY19 M4 since dealers will try to create space for the MY20s that'll be due out come possibly May/June. Always email dealers or get in writing a breakdown of costs and post on here so users can best aid you along to getting the best deal you can.

The new G80 M3/M4 won't even have 6MT as an option other than on the "basic" Pure edition which will be barebones with the options. Could mean that a 6MT M4 could be more valuable for those enthusiasts years later, but who knows, could also mean jack-diddly.

If this M2 or M4 you're getting is gonna be your weekend car, get the M2. If its gonna be a DD, get the M4. This is the mantra I read every now and again when I come across a M2 vs M4 thread

My vote is neither. Pick up a used M2C. They are already coming up on the secondary market for right around $60k.

2015 M3/M4 for under 50k all day. Less depreciation than buying a new car. even if they are 'discounted' the depreciation curve is still steeper for the newer car. Its not like they changed much in the F8x life span. Its all coding/tuning. Hardware essentially is the same.

Why don't you recommend M2C?

50k miles or $? I understand that for financing purposes buying a used one makes more sense, but what about warranty and stuff? Maintenance will surely be more costly.

I'd save the money and look for a good 2015-2016, competition package really doesn't mean anything if you want to tune the car. I drove the models back to back and couldn't tell any difference between comp and not.

what about it ?? have you looked at the maintenance these cars require? its pretty much nothing except fluid changes. plugs after 60-70k miles like any other car. do some research. It'll cost you more to run a e46 and do valve adjustments every so many thousands of miles.

I'd get a CPO M4 ZCP if I was going to buy. Preferably below 40k miles. If I was getting a new one, I'd just lease an M4.

Your dealer is a big fat liar. You can get an M2C off the lot right now.

I have a 2016 GTI as my daily and it feels more gokart-y than my M3. If you want to stay with a smaller feeling car then I think the M2C would be the better choice.

I'd have to drive the M2C before I could say. I LOVE my M3C.... by far the best M3 to date.... by a country mile.

Is the M2C as good? Maybe. Could be better or worse.

But one thing I know for sure... the M3/4 look much, much better than the M2 and so that right there would steer me in the M4C direction. Plus you get the full monty S55 and not the detuned version... AND... the CF roof.

Really don't see much case for an M2C if I'm honest unless it drives better, which I highly doubt. It's not any lighter so I doubt it feels/drives notably smaller, it's not as badass, not as fast and doesn't look as good.

M4 over M2C

My recommendation after coming from a 2014 335i that was FBO, tuned and totally modded out, to a F80 M3 is definitely go with a M4. The quality of the interior alone is worth buying the M4 over a 2 series, albeit a kick ass M2C. The M seats, full extended leather dash, door cards, and real carbon fiber blow away the M2C's interior. Just my opinion.

The shorter wheelbase attests to the different handling characteristics compared to the F8X.

Of course. But is it markedly better such that all of the other shortcomings are easily overlooked?

The F80 has zero problem turning. It's an extremely nimble machine, albeit a big machine

My E46 M3 feels and drives notably smaller... more flcikable... blah blah... but the F80 is a vastly superior/fulfilling machine to drive.

I own both cars you mentioned. I prefer my M2C for driving experience but M3 for the convenience features.

M2C drives better than my M3 ZCP on the road. Haven't tracked either yet though so ymmv

Good input.

How does it drive better? (serious question, I'm interested in your thoughts)
