Paint Distortion on 2017 F80 - Silverstone Metallic Thoughts?
Hi everyone, I noticed these spots above the drivers side on my 2017 M3 yesterday. I'm located in CT and we've had a recent cold front come through and I left my car outside overnight. It usually sits in the garage during the winter months, but not that evening. I recently had the carbon fiber outer strip replaced at the dealer on the drivers side, although I doubt that is associated with these spots.
Does anyone have any idea what these spots are? It seems to me the clear coat or paint has been stripped. |

Looks like oxidation or the clear coat being stripped like you said.
I read somewhere that a dealership replaced the rubber around some windows and the guy had the same problem from what I can see in the pics. It came down to then using some cleaning solution or glue that damaged the clear coat. Definitely did not happen from leaving your car out for one night. Do you have the same problem on the passenger side? |

Take the car back to the dealer asap.
It is obviously caused by the repair you had done in December since it is in the area of the repair. Why would this area have oxidation and no other areas on the car? |

I couldn't agree more and I'll be going in first thing tomorrow if they're open or first thing Tuesday morning to see what they have to say. I'll keep everyone updated with what they have to say. I appreciate all the help and comments.

Damn! Sorry to see this. I'm leaning toward a chemical caused "staining" of the clear coat from what the dealer used in either prepping or removing the roof strip.

Thanks and I appreciate your comments. I went and pulled up my receipt from when they fixed the molding and it does show they used cleanser, cleaner and painted the roof molding specifically on the left side so I have something to go back to them on.

From a fellow SSII owner ….That part number comes up as a BMW assembly cleaning fluid…
Contains 70% isopropanol. I'm speculating that it was sprayed on and some excess amount literally sat on the clear coat doing obvious visible damage. I would have the shop foreman admit that in know way this is remotely acceptable. Good luck. |

What strip or part was replaced? How was it damaged?

It was the roof drip molding which had come loose. The adhesive in the back wasn't working and the molding was popping up in the back. It's hard to see in the picture because of how dark it is, but they had fixed it before with new glue, but it kept popping up.

This looks like clear coat failure. Can you catch it with your nail? If not it may be worth taking some compound to try and buff it out.
If you catch it with your nail it needs resprayed |

I brought it in to the dealer and the foreman took a look. He thinks the clear coat has been stripped and he sent a few pictures to the body shop for further review. Waiting to hear back on their comments. |
