Just got a notice that Automobile has been discontinued - was a good mag.

Apparently not! I have digital subscriptions to some things, but still enjoy thumbing through physical car magazines, of which I get 7 (well, now 6).

It really is surprising that ANY magazine can still be in existence anymore, like GQ and playboy I just don't understand how they remain profitable

does seem, sadly, like a trend. Automobile now, Autoweek last month, Roundel deleting one month....worst of all by far was the demise of Bimmer a couple years ago.
suspect it's loss of advertisers gone to the internet. ahh well....

Yeah...I remember when Road & Track, which was what I considered THE best car mag got sold to the same publishing group that puts out Car & Driver and Motor Trend. So instead of great articles from the California viewpoint (and other non-Detroit areas), it turned into another C&D/MT "clone" with over a dozen full pages of advertising (8 pages for WeatherTech), a Michigan-based viewpoint, and articles about Trucks and SUVs. When Peter Egan left the mag, it went downhill from there.

I thought C&D and R&T were a pair and then MT and Automobile were a separate pair? Otherwise, I agree, the expansion of truck coverage and periodic political statements have made all the auto magazines less interesting.

I liked automobile and subscribed at various points since the 1990s. I've had R&T at times as well. MT and C&D have been staples for me since 1991.

yes indeed, back when it was a newspaper, was called Competition Press (which was where the Jean Behra helmet logo came from), there were no trucks and no SUVs. CP provided racing coverage, especially European racing, WEEKLY when there was zero TV. before CP you had to wait until next month's R&T.
one of my favorite things about CP was the classified section. stuff listed there (for peanuts, but who knew?) today is only seen at Pebble Beach. still remember this gem:
"....1951 XK120 FHC, OEW over red hides, Laycock de'N OD, disc wheels with spats, tool kit. Runs good, doesn't overheat, usually. Wife says Jag goes or she goes. $1400, either one."

There was so much overlap with MotorTrend.

I think it might come into question if you bring a pile of mags into the crapper with you.

Automobile was a bunch of articles about how pretty the ride scenery was vs the actual car.

R&T got so weak I'm not even sure they were testing cars anymore.

Autoweek was all advertising- I used to play "find the article"

MT seems to get it and C&D always has - so I'm glad I have those - in paper format

Man that is the truth on autoweek. I had them I think in the late 90s or early 00s, pretty good, some adverts but pretty solid. I sub'd again about 7 or 8 years ago for two years and it was terrible. The writing and articles were fine but I think it was literally 65 or 70% adverts if not more.
