I’m not sure if you’re being serious? This entire thread is completely about the tint on this car and whether it is one type or the other.

You keep referring to the tint as if it's removable, I don't know how many times it has to be said that it's factory tinted glass.

OK based on those pictures I would have to agree that it looks like it is not a film. Those are pretty low resolution photos but I see no sign of the telltale “dot-matrix” area I was talking about. Looks like I was wrong. I apologize for muddying the waters. Certainly a very unusual situation and I don’t know how you’re going to solve it. Best of luck!

Let me say I apologize for sounding cocky in all of this but I find it incredibly unlikely that this is not aftermarket film. I guess anything is possible but in over 25 years of experience in the car tinting business I have never encountered this and have never heard about it from any other tint shop owners So I will be very interested to find out what the end result is.
So you're saying you know a little about window tint?!

Switch

What about the possibility of switching windows with somebody who lives in a state that allows rear window tint? In California you can black out the rears if you want. Some people would LOVE to have those windows. FWIW, why did everybody doubt the OP?

Some people claimed expert knowledge but didn't know what they were talking about just because it wasn't in their realm of experience. The fact that the OP said that it had a unique option (420 - Privacy glass) and later showed a picture of the window sticker apparently didn't dissuade some people from claiming otherwise. Welcome to the Internet, where facts are fake news...

It's a unicorn car but some people couldn't accept that and denied that there actually was a horn on that horse...

Edited to add, after the whole thing was done and over: But Tintking has redeemed himself by apologizing and admitting that he was wrong, thus restoring his credibility!

Unfortunately proving it isn't film doesn't help me get the car on the road. I'm still screwed. I actually wanted tintking to be right.

I have contacted a lawyer and they don't want to get involved. Local BMW dealership is trying to help but service manager is my primary point of contact and he is out with the flu.

I'll take it if you don't want it. No issues here in FL. J/K, but I was seriously looking at this car late last year. Wife ended up with a X3MC instead of taking over my X5M and my M3 plans got derailed a bit.

BTW, seems like a reasonable fix might be some glass from a wreck. There's got to be a bunch of 3 series cars of that vintage that are sitting in scrap yards. It might be a bit far-fetched but that's what I'd consider doing, then get the dealer to install the glass for you. One Jahre 30 I found does not have those same rear dark windows and it was originally a FL car, go figure.

Best of luck resolving this. Not trying to make light of your situation, it's got to be very frustrating.

BMW Annapolis? Maybe have them get the car and have it 'inspected' for you.

Told my dealer about the car - he said "I bet it is Canadian, send me the VIN"

VIN sent - I realize it is a shot in the dark, but who knows!

Edit:negative. Only suspicion is it was BMW Corp car.

Well, local BMW dealer may be able to help. They are saying that they are willing to interpret the Code of MD Regulations in such a way that says the AS3 markings make the glass legal and as long as there is no application of film that the section on "post manufacture tint" is not applicable.

I have an appointment to get it inspected by them on Thursday.

I'm trying not to get too excited but this is the only good news I've gotten in all this.

My dealer seems to think that the early builds (your car was built in August of 2016) might have been press cars with the euro glass. I only checked one other vin - much higher than your car and that did not have it. So that might be some clues to the mystery. He is not able to tell who used to own the car unfortunately.

Hope MD let's it fly!

But....

It depends on how you read the regs. The code of Maryland regulations mentions the application of Post manufacture window film and gives the parameters what is allowed. The entire section of the regulations mentions Post manufacturer over and over. One interpretation would be that if there is Not any application of anything post manufacture than that entire section of the regulations doesn’t apply. Unfortunately the state police trooper that was called to the inspection place to make a judgment thought otherwise.

I thought about getting a lawyer involved. But that starts to seem kind of crazy. Why the fuck would I have to pay a lawyer to help register bone stock production car?
Who used a razor blade on the window? You or someone from dealership telling you this? I still don’t believe it. How are you able to scrape the windows with a razor and not able to post a photo as I requested?? There is no way this car would be manufactured and sent to US with factory tinted “SUV privacy” glass like depicted in the photos. It is against our federal regulations. It would be like getting a car without crash protection features or side marker lights or emissions controls! The only way it could possibly occur is if someone was able to buy European spec glass and have it shipped to the US and installed in this car. This would cost a few thousand dollars instead of getting the windows tinted here for a few hundred. Only an idiot would do this.

I’m glad that so many of the responses here indicate they have either not read my posts or have ignored them completely.
Except realoem shows the glass available and installed on USA models.

Guess you are the one ignoring posts.

Means it's available option sold in the USA. Not a mistake or a European Version. And you ignored that post and info on first page several days ago, while accusing others of ignoring your post with incorrect info.

DOT number also proves it's a legit USA part. Note EU (ECE) Headlights do not have DOT number on them.

So I "borrowed" the car from selling dealer in PA and drove it to my local dealer in MD who thinks they can interpret regs in such a way to pass the car.

They have the car in the bay now. I wish they let me hang with the shop foreman and inspector during the inspection but they stuck me in the waiting room.

Sipping my "free" coffee and posting here because I can do nothing but wait....

This is likely the last ditch effort. If they change their mind and don't pass it I will have to go back to PA and try to get my money back.

I'll post an update later and hopefully close out new guy, long thread, TLDR.

Maybe I'll jump into the thread that I just saw about driving gloves. (not really. I hope this forum has more meat on the bone than that and M3 ownership isn't about driving gloves on the street.)
