Spent a day driving the Tesla Model 3 performance

After getting back in my car at the end of the day, I felt almost dishevelled, I'm sure on the race track my M4 will exhibit better handling due to less weight and better suspension geometry. But on the road, the Tesla Model 3 performance was insane.

The way it accelerated, the way it put the power down in the corners, was absurd, laughable. It changed directions extremely well, and with all that weight down low there was hardly any body roll. It had a softer more compliant ride than the M4, but with less body roll.

I love my M4 though, maybe a full electric conversion is on the cards

Haven't driven one before. How do u slow down ? Just brakes? The m3 I use downshifts to slow down and brakes. Kind of more safety.

You can just lift off the accelerator and it will regen to slow down (you can change this to 3 different modes) or just use the brakes.

The most surprising thing (as I knew it was going to be really fast in a straight line) is how much confidence it gave you in the corners. That's what blew me away more than anything.

How was the interior? Remind you of a Kia? Did you enjoy the fart noises?

It's a toaster that goes fast to 60 mph then dies out

I'm not a Tesla hater, I can appreciate the engineering and innovation in some parts of the car. But it's not a complete package, and really isn't comparable to a German sports car. It's a bit like comparing a Corvette to a GT3RS. Personally, I think mashing it at every stoplight would get old, then you're left with that interior and exterior design.

I can appreciate the straight line speed. But having seen many of these cars up close at my buddy's detail shop I was just appalled at the build quality and lack of QC for these cars.

On top of all that Tesla customer service is severely lacking and it always seems like one division of the company doesn't know what the other is doing.

Glad Tesla exists because it forces the mainstream manufacturers to rethink their offerings and old way of doing business. Hopefully they stick around but they got lots of work to do in terms of customer service.

EV are really progressing fast with Tesla presently leading the pack. It is only a question of time for them to make ICE vehicles obsolete, even in the performance segment.

Being a model 3 and m4 owner, there is space for both in your life. It doesn’t need to be EV vs ICE — you can appreciate cars of all types.

Global automakers have decided that EV is the future, not consumers. It's my opinion that this is largely due to lower production cost, higher MSRP and thus larger margins. Tesla has made great advances but it's still a niche vehicle. The ICE will be around for a long, long time even if there are large advances in battery tech. Especially in the US.

The Model 3 interiors drive me nuts. For example, get in the back seat and look at how the door cards meet the b pillar. Tesla finish quality has a long way to go before displacing the nicer German brands. The acceleration is fun to experience however. Quick not fast. Great fun to drive on the street.

I see it differently. It is the governments that have decided that EVs are the future, not the automakers. I also believe that it is the other way around in terms of costs, where EVs are more costly to produce (at least for now) and they are only viable in the market through government incentives.

I agree about governments, just so happens that it works out well for the automakers as well.

I think it will happen faster than that. The Porsche Taycan is quite impressive. Once they can get the weight of EVs in check, they will be outstanding performance wise.

I have been eyeing a model 3 Performance, myself. My neighbor has a Dual motor Model 3 and it has left me quite impressed, overall.

My biggest concerns are the constant news about the 3's sub-par build quality and ridiculously long periods without the car if it needs repairs/parts.

I also must admit that the exterior of the 3 just looks strange to me. I think it's the bubble shaped front windshield area that throws me off most. I thought it might grow on me but it really hasn't. And while I am usually one to prefer sharp/clean minimalistic styling, the Model 3 interior just feels so cold and unwelcoming.

This is surprising. I always thought that the extra weight of this car would make it corner like a truck. I hadn't considered that all that weight is down near the wheels. Interesting...

Generally speaking, I do agree with ///M4ster Yoda that it will be decades before EV's truly make ICE vehicles obsolete. However, I think we are just ~5 years away from EV's taking the majority of cars on the road.

Hell, here in Boulder, CO EV's already seem to account for 50%+ of vehicles out and about on a daily basis. Almost all of those are Model 3's. They've become more common around here than Subaru Outbacks. And I'm not even exaggerating.

I test drove a M3P and was blown away by the acceleration and cornering as well. I enjoyed the softer ride compared to the M3. But I think I would miss the sound.

I would not mind a small EV for running around the city, something like an i3S or e-Golf, but still want to row my own gears in an ICE car. Makes an otherwise mundane drive a bit more special to me.

The styling is pretty hideous. I was cruising on the highway a few days ago and noticed one in the rearview. Jesus that thing is butt ugly from the front. It's narrow and tall which makes it look like a rolling box. It's also butt ugly from behind. From the side, it looks like a basic cheap econobox. The proportions are just all wrong from every angle, the greenhouse is tall and weird looking, and finish and styling cues just all look really cheap. Engineering marvel or not, it's just too fugly for the cheddar they are asking. They set out to build an ev for the masses, they ended up building a cheap econobox looking road wart that costs 60k. At least it doesn't look like the even more hideous Honda Clarity, so it has that going for it. Don't even get me started on the cybertruck - that thing looks like someone welded up some sheet metal panels they found in a scrap heap in their basement.

Personally, I don't get the fascination with 0-60 times either. 3 or 4 seconds, does it really matter at that level? I've been driving fast cars for decades, I VERY RARELY feel the need to to get to 60 in 4 seconds, much less 3. Stomping the accelerator at every single stoplight is nothing more than a great way to get into accidents or pile up the exhibition of speed tickets. Who drives that way day in and day out?
