CPO'd M4 with no service history

Hey guys, I'm currently looking at a 1-owner CPO F82 with a clean carfax but no service history listed. Dealer doesn't have records either as it wasn't serviced there. Right now just pinging all the dealers & indy shops around the area the car was registered. So the question here is: is there another way search for service records or should I keep reaching out to shops.

Located in the Bay Area, car was registered in Los Gatos if it helps.

Any help would be appreciated

Someone must have the service records because I don't think that the car can be CPOed if the required maintenance intervals were not followed. If the selling dealer is the one that CPOed the car and is telling you that they don't have the records, I wouldn't trust them. There might be something in the service records that might make the car undesirable.

However, since the car is CPOed, it should have a CPO warranty.

Thanks for the reply. Yeah I would have thought that the CPO process would require some sort of recorded maintenance (not even the break-in service is on the carfax). The response I've gotten is that the services records are personal info of the prior owner, and therefore they don't have them. Seems a little odd...

Has CPO warranty thru next year, but I'm more concerned about maintenance; that the oil and fluids were changed in the proper intervals as I plan to put a decent share of HPDE days on this thing and don't want to start with a (possibly) neglected motor.

Call BS

The service department has access to a db which includes, associated with each VIN, data shown in the attached image. Show them this image and ask to see a copy for your vehicle.

Some "Defect Code/Description" items now include: "1200 MI SERV", "OIL SERV", etc.

I have a copy of this for my car (purchased new) -- this includes information for service on my car before my purchase date. As you can see from the headings, there is no owner information included.

The service department that gave me my copy did not perform all the services listed for my vehicle - they can clearly see work done on my vehicle by other BMW dealerships.

While you are at it, ask the dealership to provide you a copy of the "Vehicle Inspection Checklist" which they had to fill out in order to CPO the vehicle - see attached pdf.

The dealer is full of crap. They can do a simple key read and tell you everything that was done at any BMW dealership for the life of the car.

Glad to see that you're planning on doing HPDEs. My wife and I are avid track addicts. We have an HPDE coming up at Buttonwillow at the beginning of March. We've run at Laguna Seca many times but this year we're not going to be at the BMW CCA Golden Gate Chapter HPDE at LS at the end of February. That would be two weekends back-to-back, lots of freeway driving to get to both tracks and back, and my wife can't take that much time off work since she started a new job last May.

Are you a member of the BMW CCA Golden Gate Chapter? Maybe we'll run into you at an HPDE in the future!

It's probably not a BMW CPO vehicle then.

Some dealers have two types of CPO classes. One is under the manufacturer's flag, the other is a dealer level CPO. You can usually spot these as you'll see off brands also carrying the CPO designation at the dealer. The dealer CPO program is generally a cash grab marketing tactic which lets the dealer sell the car at a premium as everyone believes CPO programs are manufacturer backed.

If it has no service history, BMW won't CPO it. Part of the requirement is the car must have had all the factory recommended services done (at the correct intervals) in order to qualify.

I personally paid the premium for the manufacturer backed CPO program as it also allowed me to ended the warranty through BMW as well. With that said, the extended warranty is written such that I doubt they will ever cover anything. The exclusion list is pretty large and as soon as they figure out you did any sort of "performance driving" in it, BOOM...warranty is null and void.

Yes, the plan is to buy and drive this car as intended for as long as possible

Not yet a member of GG CCA, but planning on it once I'm in the M4 - my local meet is in Moraga so looking forward to joining the community once I find the right car. Will be sure to send you a PM when the time comes!

BMW will not allow a car to be CPOed if it is missing services, especially break in service or lets say the oil change service was not performed within a certain amount of time/miles. Any BMW dealership has access to the records regardless of where it was performed. The vehicle has to pass certain standards as well. For instance tires cannot be less than 3mm from wear bars, brakes have to be 5mm and up etc etc.

Exactly.
I would check this car out very good before buying it. A lot people I know change their own oil and don't take the car in for service because their cars are heavily modded. They rather pay out of pocket for minor service instead of taking their modded cars to the dealership.

Yes, or they can type in the last 7 of the VIN. OP could call another dealer, provide the last 7, and hope they will provide him with the records.

The dealer where my former F82 was serviced did not report anything to CarFax. Yet every service was done on time. Use CarFax as a filter to find bad entries but do not rely on it for completeness.

Also, OP, I assume you are dealing with a BMW dealer (vs. other brand or used car lot) right?

Yes, join us at the GGC. We're good people too! We even like SD ///M4. We are doing a Laguna Day Feb 29-March 1 (spots filling up quick), we also have Thunderhill Nov 7-8. And we are going to announce another HPDE shortly which will be at Buttonwillow.

Thanks for all the input! Was able to get the service records thru the internal database from the dealer (BMW), everything done on time and within spec. Weird that I had to tug a little, but not a big deal.

I have had push back on non-cpo cars asking dealers for records, they all claim privacy, but many car I have purchased have left over owner records in the trunk, glovebox or in the nav

That is also crap as well. While there is a way to print out previous owner info with BMW service history (which is what my dealer told me), there is also a way to just print out the service history. I recently bought a used 2009 128i and brought it to the dealer for an emissions warranty repair. While there, I asked them to do a key read and they were able to get me a printout of the complete dealer maintenance history without any PII from the previous owner.

Regarding other PII stuff being left in the car following a trade/lease turn-in, my wife's CPO'ed X3 had the previous owners insurance card, address and even SSN still in the owners manual binder in the glovebox .....
