Regrets about moving from my F80 to an F90?

So I'm moving on from my 17 comp pack ymb f80 to a new f90 comp pack next month. I've driven the f90 non-comp and it is brutally fast, but very insulated compared to the f80. For all practical purposes, it handles as well if not better in real world driving given it is awd. I'm sure on the track it doesn't feel as nimble as the f80, but I don't track my f80. I have an older e90 m3 that I do track and will continue to own.

I know there are quite a few people who knock the current f8x platform and say Bmw didn't build the ultimate drivers car, and cars like the Alfa can best it. But truly, I have enjoyed this car quite a bit. I actually enjoyed the exhaust despite all the flack it takes. I also enjoyed the fact there is just a little too much power going to rear wheels and it feels a bit dangerous at times. I enjoyed the aggressive fender flares. I enjoyed that with snow tires, I could drive year round. I enjoyed the available tech and that I could talk on the phone without people knowing I was in my car. I enjoyed the smurf blue color. I enjoyed 75 year old grandmothers telling me how cool they thought the smurf blue color was while pumping gas. I actually enjoyed that sometimes I got over 20mpg (not often). I enjoyed the car's duality. I enjoyed that my kids love riding in daddy's fast car. I also loved reading the f8x forums. I don't post that often, but I read pretty regularly and this forum is way more entertaining then the f90 forum. Thank you to all of you who contribute!

I am going to miss quite a bit about this car. I really loved my e90, but as time has moved forward, I think I love the f80 even more. I remember a few years ago when I ordered my f80, how many naysayers there were about this platform versus the old. After years of having both, and driving them both back to back, the f8x is truly a great car. I wish I could keep it and still buy the f90, but that isn't an option.

We have three kids and I live in Chicagoland. The extra space will keep my family a bit more comfortable. Awd isn't an absolute necessity, but I have a longish commute and I have to be at work regardless of weather. Awd will make things a little easier and probably safer (given I still drive faster than I probably should in inclement weather). The m5 fits the bill for now. I just hope the comp pack feels a bit more raw than the f90 I drove. In comfort mode, the f80 was pretty docile for my passengers. And sport plus was great for when it was just me. I hope the same dichotomy exists in the f90 comp pack. I'm excited about getting an m5 as the car truly is monstrous with its power, grip, and luxury, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't going to miss my f80.

Ugh
I felt the same way when I drove my friend's F90. I LOVED that car, but it was missing the "rawness" of the F80 - which I also love and believe they have gotten all sorted out now.

The AWD would be nice - but/and I agree with you, if the comp edition does not add some edginess to the F90, i might tire of driving a luxury car.

and... now I'm trying to help my friends (one with F90, one with G30 550 and 20" summer rubber) find 19" wheels for the winter - short of buying them from BMW, I'm not sure what their options are since there don't seem to be too many take offs avail.

Anyway, good luck and if you are ever in the Glen Ellyn area - can I drive your car?

I'll let you know when I find a decent winter package. I'm going to go after market most likely and I have found a few wheel options that are relatively cheap, but will require spacers in the rear if you want to do a square setup.

You can def drive my car once it arrives, but it will be some time. And I might ask to drive your 1M! We are doing euro delivery with the kiddos in tow next month! I don't think the car will be back stateside till mid November. We live in Glenview, so not that far.

I think half the problem with the f90 is how well it is sound insulated. The exhaust is pretty loud outside the car, but inside you can barely hear it. That sound contributed to the rawness quite a bit.

The M5 has always been more on the luxury side. I've always viewed it as being for the business professional who wants a luxury ride during the week, while still being able to open it up on the weekends. I'm not sure I'd call any M5 in stock form "raw", and that's by design.

That's a lot of $ to spend to be regretful.

sell your e90m, keep the f80 as the toy and get an awd non M 5er. Or an x5 or whatever.

Or just don't sell the f80 and keep the status quo.

It's a pretty easy regret to avoid OP

My E60 was plenty raw. Also missing torque, but that is another story.

No regrets! Just sad to be letting go of a car that I liked much more than I thought I would when I first bought it. I currently daily the f80 and will daily the f90 when it arrives. I like the firmer suspension, the rumble of the exhaust/engine and near instant throttle response in m cars. I've driven the 550 and it isn't the same as an m car.

No one needs to feel sorry for me! I live a pretty privileged life to be able to have and enjoy these cars. But that doesn't mean I can't shed a metaphorical tear for my f80. It was quite a hoot while it lasted! And better in pretty much every way than the car it replaced. I will probably feel the same way when it is time to get rid of the f90. Sentimental value is the reason I can't get rid of the e90 (plus, it is still a monster in its own right)! I wanted an m3 since I was 13 years old and found out what it was. I'm 41 now and I don't think I will ever be able to get rid of my first m3!
Cheers

Couldn't you just save some cash and get a M550i xdrive, it already out accelerates last gen M5. If the F90 is too insulated and missing the rawness of the F80. Also you don't track your F80. What is the point of shelling out the extra cash for the F90.

That would be a bad idea. They are two VERY different cars and the 550xi is all luxury and very little sport - and even less sound.

I went with a friend to pick up his 550 and while it is an amazing car, it is really boring coming from a F80. Didn’t even feel fast (and I know it is).

The standard M5 is a completely different car - but still a bit on the boring side.

IMHO

If you're keeping the E90 M3 I think you have the best of both worlds. The F90 feels to me as more of the evolution or next level of the F80, while the things either of them don't do well, you get in the E90

My default vote for large cars is e63 wagon. Resonator delete and bench flash to 700hp

Huge sound, drama and v8 highway pull when you want it, and cushy interior with cooled/heated massage seats and IWC clock in the dash when you want to hang back and chill

I'm thinking about the M5 too. I think I'm going to really like/want the new M8 when it comes out someday. I don't think I can do four doors. My son is grown and I really dislike passengers anyway. But the M5 is a beast. I think I'll keep my M4 a while and see what the M8 looks like. I know, I know, I can get a 911 for that price. Never liked the looks of any Porsche. Enjoy the M5 in good health. You will be able to torch just about any car on the road with it.

The e63 wagon is sweet. I don't really have need for a wagon as we have an suv. I'm not a big fan of the looks of it overall, but there is no denying its performance. that is pretty much the only thing available as bmw won't bring an M wagon here. Now if there were an M5 wagon, I might be tempted as I have always wanted one, despite not really having a need for one!
