K & N Filter
Just bought the K & N replacement air filters and they came pre oiled in what seems to be a lot of oil. It says it's to protect it in drier climates but I heard it messes up the mass air flow sensors so can I just rinse it and remove the oil before I install it or is the oil necessary?

The oem oil amount is usually perfect it’s usually when someone tried to redo it is when it gets risky I just put mine in about 3 weeks ago I love them easy install all I did was throw them straight in and it was good I’m 200miles in nothing yet and those were 200 hard miles
Yes oil is necessary in these filters or it wouldn’t be a filter it wouldn’t stop anything without the oil. There’s 1 company that makes a high performance dry filter it’s around the 200$ mark correct me if I’m wrong but I love k&n always used them in my old 911’s and will always use them in the future I say just throw them in and forget about it you will have to clean maf sensors in future but not for a long time k&n even did a test and apparently the maf sensors didn’t even fail after being drenched in oil so my standing is it would take a lot of oil to do something and that won’t be anytime soon maybe never |

Install as is. Flow will decrease on subsequent cleaning and re-oiling so it’s best to replace after a few cycles. Even then these type of filters filter better once it has trapped a little dirt so you’ll likely go 25-50k before your first full cleaning.

Evening folks, I've recently installed K&N filters and my CEL light came on in a matter of weeks...
I reset the light and cleaned the excess oil off the filters and reinstalled to find the CEL came on again after 1 week... I'm not sure really where to do with the problem - and its impacting idle as you would expect/read. I'm considering my options and would love any steer from you guys who might be able to advise... - Replace the existing MAF sensors? - Can the existing ones be re-calibrated or ESYS update the expected/reported numbers? - Does a re-map help with mass air expectations? I can live with the CEL light on, but the idle performance seems to be getting worse |

I always go with BMC - it's dry ran on several cars, including 911 turbo, no issues, I used knn's before, it was nothing but dirty maf overtime. thats all.

+1. If I absolutely had to run a different filter, I'd run a dry one. I've used K&N filters on several other vehicles in the past with good success, but there's really no reason to on this car. With any oiled filter, you run the risk and there's no reward on the S55.

I’ve been using KN on all my cars for years. Never had a problem with the MAF. Just be patient when cleaning and oiling. Usually takes me 3/4 passes to oil properly. Then you can just gently brush the wireframe where some oil drops collect.
I did a baseline dyno on the M3 and went back after about 300 Miles. There were nice gains with the filters and removal of charcoal filters. Mostly in the midrange, IIRC. I’ll make a new thread with the graph. I haven’t been on here for 3.5 months am catching up on all the posts. Totally happy with them. |
