Penzoil Platinum Euro L 5W-40 Pure Plus Technology

Going to change the oil in the M4 and wanted to get your thoughts on this new oil from Penzoil? BMW is now using this in place of the Castrol Turbo oil correct? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

That oil will work just fine in your M4. You are correct in that Shell/Pennzoil has replaced Castrol as the BMW branded oil, however, BMW branded oil does not come in a 5w40 grade.

I went on the Penzoil website and it gave me two options 5w-30 which was LL-04 approved and 5w-40 which was LL-01 approved? What is the Dealer using?

The manual calls for Longlife-01 FE (LL-01 FE), Longlife-01 (LL-01), or API SL or higher oil rating.

Pennzoil Platinum Euro is LL-01 approved, and meets or exceeds API SN/CF, so this oil will work just fine on the S55. For reference, most name brand full synthetic oil also meet/exceed API SL oil rating, so those are okay to use as well.

Ok I appreciate that info!

The dealers use either 5w30 (LL-01) or 0w30 (LL-01FE). This is just to keep it simple for them as there are a wide range of oil grades that carry the LL-01 approval and of course they dont carry every one.

To clarify - the LL-01 approval is what is important and not just the API rating.

Technically, LL-01 is an alternative to LL-01 FE, but I feel like we've been down this road before

I always say oil is something that boils down to personal preference based on personal experiences along with preferred OCI. Those who change their engine oil every 10k miles or longer should definitely stick to LL-01 FE approved ratings. However, per the manual, API SL or higher will also work as an alternative, especially for those who prefer to do 4-5k mile OCI.

I don't know which manual you are looking at but mine says the oil should belong to either LL-01 or LL-01FE. It doesn't say one is preferred with the other being an alternative, simply that either one is fine. It also states that oil carrying either of these approvals are the only suitable ones.

Under alternative oil types, it says only if one of the above is not available may you use up to 1qt (I.e. just for top up in a pinch) of an API SM of above rating.

I'm not saying using an oil that doesn't carry the LL-01/FE certification will harm the engine in any way but the manual is specific as to what is appropriate and what is not.

This is off a 2017 manual.

and here's an old discussion on how LL-0x isn't necessary for short OCIs: http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=723130

LL01-FE 0w30 wasn't being used for first year or two in the F8X run. I believe it started sometime late 2016, so all answers here are correct.. Early F8X models were being changed out with 0w40 or the 5w30 twin power oil.

Long as you see LL01 / LL01FE, either or works. Given a choice, I'd prefer LL01 over LL01FE as the FE is the thinner (fuel efficient) blend. They also stopped carrying the original M specific 0w40 Twinpower oil made by SOPUS (not castrol) as well. That oil was literally only available to buy at dealers in my first 2 years of owner ship (2015-16).

Brief timeline of changes

Picked up car in 2015 (run in 1200 mile change with LL01 5w30 Twinpower turbo)
First oil change in 2016 (Dealer changed to LL01FE 0W30 Twin power turbo)
Second oil change in 2017 (Dealer used LL01FE 0w30 Twin power turbo)

Pretty sure everything now at dealer is 0w30 LL01FE. But like you said sticking to any BMW LL01 will be fine.
