If you want to talk motor semantics; the F10 M5 was the first M car with a turbo-charged "M Motor" built from scratch, since the E82 & E92 already had the same exact standard, whored-out, [B]N[B]54 as the 1M. I was merely correcting the gentleman who claim that M4 was the first M car with a turbo-charged M motor.. Didn't mean to go this far down the rabbit hold.. |

As with everything in life, nothing is "clear cut" Some could even argue that this is the first and greatest turbo ///M engine ever:

All trash-talking aside - the ONLY criticism I've ever heard as to the S55 is sound - and ZCP and MPE easily take care of that. To otherwise compare the N55 to the S55 is utter delusion (and we all know that you know that too). |

Also, you guys are taking my comment too personal, I love the look of M4, it's the best looking vehicle BMW currently produces, it can be had with every single option available and has a much better quality ride than an M2, due to its larger wheel base and availability of adaptive suspension. If it wasn't for its larger dimensions (I have a small driveway), it would be on my shortlist of vehicles, regardless of how it sounds. My criticism was related to its unreasonable deprecation which is not exclusive to just the M4 but all modern mass-produced BMWs. #NoBeef |

I think the sound issue is way overblown on here because it's "not cool" to say it sounds ok.
Everybody who I've given a ride to has said something between "it sounds a lot better better than people on the forums say" to "I love the way it sounds!" It's not a Ferrari V8, but it's aggressive and matches the engines character. M cars have always had a unique "acquired taste" sound, and on that note, add me to the list that thinks it sounds better than the S54 in my M coupe. That went from dead sounding to broken raspiness with about a 30rpm band of nice sounding intake resonance if you got the throttle and gearing just right.

The rasp is definitely there on the stock exhaust system, but I gotta say, unplugging active sound and valves always open sounds pretty damn good from inside the car. I don't really hear the rasp from inside unless I'm flooring it alongside a concrete divider on a highway or something. Maybe it's just the Youtube videos blowing everything out of proportion, because they really do sound like garbage online. Especially DCT with TC enabled. Yuck. Farts all day long. It's actually why I got a manual haha. |

Most people in this world are dumb and ignorant. If neither of these, then they're probably naive and unlearned.
/grasshopper Quoting BMW literature, the M team deliberately engineered the F8X to sound "dynamic" & "distinctive". I think we can at least come to an agreement on this as there's no question we owners can recognize our cars brapping down the road from a mile away. I'd rather this to the whored out V8 AMG with its breathless, cantankerous muscle car rasp where you cannot discern whether it's your mom's GL, her hairdresser's SL, your balding agent's GT, or the plasticized OC housewife's watered-down IFS G-wagen. I freakin' love the S55 (my first turbo car).

People simply don't realize that cars sound WAY WAY different inside the car than outside. Plus, with a ZCP exhaust or better, they actually sound decent outside the car (my wife drives the car often and I hear it from afar) and really quite good inside. The focus surrounding how these cars sounds to me is almost embarrassing. The sheer energy expended on this topic astounds me. I mean, really? This is what we enthusiasts are that obsessed with? What about actual driving? Power? Precision? Balance? Looks? Badass-ness? Sheesh... let's move on to more interesting things (not you^^.... just in general). /rant Quote:
Dare I say, even 'Vettes and Camaros really don't sound precise or particularly good. They are just deep, loud, obtuse sounding cars.... but "OMG V8 so automatically sounds so good"... yeah right. Agreed.... first turbo car.... S55 is off the hook good.

With that said, I just replaced the secondary cats with magnaflow resonators, and I take back anything I’ve ever said about the exhaust sounding bad. The swap kept the stock tone and volume, got rid of any rasp under full throttle, and even added a tiny bit of bass to the exhaust note. Still no B58, but absolutely worthy for something with an M badge on it. |

All this talk about sound. Has everyone forgotten the E46 M3 with all that rasp?Sounded like crap as well. The problem was the V8 M3 which set the bar on sound really high.
