Thanks BMW for letting everyone in the world who buys a regular 3 series think that they own an M now, should be fun...

Hard to blame BMW when all major brands are diluting their performance sub-brands in order to get someone to buy a sedan...

As long as it's a ZCP? oh gawd.. Everyone knows the M3 is only better than the M340i if it has the automatic rear window peasant blockers.

People on here - whether short or long term members - often treat M as something special and unique and intrinsically better.

Here's a hint: It's not.

Take a base 320i and spend a shitload of time on it's suspension, chassis, steering, brakes, engine, transmission, drivetrain, interior, and exterior and you get an M3.

But then again, take a 320i and invest a load of time and energy into a 340i M x-drive and you get something alot better too.

Without ever having driven it, people here are saying the f8x m3/m4 is better than the new 340i. Why? No reason given besides "it's not a true M car"

Fanboyism at it's finest.

All good points... Everyone has their car needs. I am a true M3 fan but had a 335i for a while and it was a blast to drive daily and was comfortable too in my commute. There is a lot of fanboyism in this thread, but people need to realize that if the perfect car for everyone was an F80/82 M3, then why does BMW have literally 50 other models they build? Different needs for everyone.

because the 340 and M3 have different customers that want different things. I already know i don't want a 340 because it doesn't have a CF roof or wide rear arches for starters. It will have a comfier suspension. Turbos that are more for low end pull at 1500 rpm rather than pulling strong up to top to redline.

Agreed. I'm an M3 guy not only because they are a blast to drive, but I also love how they look compared to the 330/340. It's just a different experience entirely, but sure, it's not for everyone.

Also, I like the fact that I don't see a million M3s everyday. Whereas the new 340 will be literally everywhere.

I'll wait for the m340i and take it for a hell of a test drive. Bottom line, it's probably going to be an M3 or a Quadrifolgio.

Thank you for putting it all into perspective for me.
I had a 340 xDrive with the dinan piggyback and now a 2018 M3 zcp. In ny, the 340 was much more practical now that I've driven the M3 for about 1300 miles. Even with the 18" 513m wheels on winter tires the ride is much firmer than my 340 with 19s and RFT. I'm not sure I'm going to like it when I put the 20s on which I took off after buying the car.

Acceleration with my piggyback using the butt dyno felt faster on my 340. This is partly due to the awd and the fact that the b58 has a lot of torque down low.

On the other hand, the M3 does feel a lot more special. The aggressive looks and sounds are awesome to the point I find myself daydreaming about driving it.

You have to determine what is more important to you. I am getting used to the M3 now but I can see myself taking my wife's car on longer trips with my parents in the car due to them being more comfortable than they would be in the m3. When I had my 340 we always took that car.

my sisters 428xi feels quick around town; nice and smooth; drives the city faster....somehow feels like it handles better(it doesn't)

yet i would be sick of it in like 3 days...

whereas driving the m3 especially in a manual is grabbing a bull by the horns

i cringe every road imperfection...but thats what I want right....or I would be in a cushy s5

ALSO major edit....only 1 year addtnl warranty for cpo u gotta be shitting me right lmaoooooooooooooo. how is that even CPO.

Looking back at the past models, the previous M3 WAS better than the next gen top non m car... would you take an f30 335 over an e90 m3?

And it’s looking like there’s a lot of pork in the g20 340, so yes, we need to drive it, but it’s not complete without merit to have this POV

Just about every suspension component (and then some) is tweaked or redesigned on the M3. Look at the parts bin and traditionally on the 340 level car the suspension is much closer to a 330 than an M3. I'd adventure to say the M340 is much the same.

No one is saying the M340 isn't going to be an awesome little car, it absolutely is. However, when you talk about lapping a race track that isn't the design purpose for that car. Be happy with what it is; a great comfy quick sedan. M3 levels of performance (and associated suspension comfort) aren't for everyone. Just now letting go of my 16 340i with the track handling package and the suspension is night and day different on my new F80. The M340i will be a fast little car but isn't going to run with an F80 if we are talking about corners. In the wet or stoplight consistency will obviously favor the xdrive car. Those on here who get US spec RWD M340s better hope even with a tune to keep up in a straight line with a stock F80.

FWIW insurance cost is negligible. Literally $1 more for 6 months on a F80 vs my outgoing 340. Gas? Yeah, I'm sure the M340i will get better mileage but weren't we just talking about lapping a racetrack?

Remember how the e9x gen 330 was better than the e4x M3? Oh wait, no it wasn't... But remember how the f3x 335 was better than the e9x M3? Nope, that didn't happen either...

There is a first time for everything, but if history is any indication, the new 340 will not be anywhere close to the F8x M3. Although I'm sure it will be a very nice ride.

You do realize that the M4 will still be on sale for at least another year right? There is ZERO chance that the M340i will outperform a halo car that is out at the same time...

Some of us had plenty of non M cars in the past and finally made the jump to a M car could tell you from experience that it is something more special. Sure you can upgrade the suspension, engine in a non M but that's not cost effective and there are some things you just can't upgrade after the fact.

Spent 3 years in a 2016 340i RWD track handling spec card and now in an M4. No comparison whatsoever. None. The B58 is a great engine that pulls to redline unlike the N55 or N54 which run out of steam early but suspension wise there is no comparison of an ///M and an M-Sport. None!

There's a great CPO 2016 M3 with 15k mi at my local dealer. Currently priced at 54k.

I've driven the Alfa and the BMW. Loved both but actually like the ride of the Alfa better. Wife wants me to get the Bimmer.

Thoughts on waiting for the new m340i are what I'm looking for. This will ironically be the most expensive route as well.

Thank you in advance ladies and gents...
The smart money gets you a brand new latest greatest AWD 340. It just makes more sense. I went through similar situation. CPO mint M3 or brand new whatever.

Latest and greatest or not, there's no way that I'd pay $800-900 a month for a 340 when I can get a far superior car for the same or maybe even less. To each their own though.

F80 M3 or if you can wait approximately a year and a half more the G80 is bound to be on a entirely different level. 340i will never have the soul of an M car even if it has all the numbers 0-60.

what do you value more? comfort and tech, easy DD - then go with the normal 3 series.

if you like performance, tight ride, aggressive ride then get the M3

Not everyone wants an M car. I have plenty of friends who just dont want the M experience every day.

Like my Mom, she's a m340i buyer.

So the moral is if my Mom is comfortable in the car then I dont want it

get the M.

Lol. One of the reasons I’ve avoided corvettes, but I pulled up next to (what I think was ) a granny in an LEXUS RCF,
so I’m sure there’s some rockin grannies in ///Ms also...

What far superior car can you get for less?
Also how do you define far superior against something you never stepped foot in????
