weird. i sat in the ZCP and found the seats to be comfortable. sure it lacks the lumbar support, but there is so much padding and the extra side bolsters literally hug me. its like sinking into a mushy comforter. i found it to be really nice.

as for the wife, she's extremely petite and loves the regular F80 seats. according to her, it's by far the most comfortable. on long drives on the highway, i keep the valves open on the MPE, let it drone a little bit at 2K rpm and the wife totally knocks out.

best thing to do is buy a seat pad for the bottom and lower back.

ZCP seats are very comfortable to me. I don't miss the lumbar support at all.

Sorry to hear this OP. Personally I can deal with a few complaints from the Mrs but something like her comfort in the car is not something I'm willing to play with fire on. Knowing she finds my car loud and excessively orange we take hers on most trips longer than an hour. Although she did want to take my car to Napa this past weekend so maybe I'm making some inroads there.

I guess what I'm wondering is whether anyone else uses a lumbar support or seat cushion in their F80/F82, and if so, how do you like it, and what do you recommend?

i picked up this one. fits perfect with the zcp seats as the straps go around the cutouts. feels soooo much better. i was close to swapping a local guy for his non zcp seats and this solved my issue.

swap the seats with a non-zcp owner

i heard guys doing all crazy things to make their non-zcp into faux zcps - might need to sweeten the deal by throwing in the seatbelts too apparently

Her biggest complaint was the side bolsters, which for her makes her sit with her arms pushed forward. She's very petite, so the seats are in some ways too large for her small stature.

As it is, I'm finding the seats 90% comfortable enough, but if I'm being honest with myself I find that I develop some discomfort along the lower half of my spine, but I find the seats otherwise really comfortable. Not sure why I have a problem with the spine of the seat, as it has plenty of cushion there.

Anyway, the point of this thread is that the seats have a very low/unexceptable WAF. It's my car, and I get to have what I want, but twice a week we have to do a 1-hour drive together, and taking my car means her bitching for the entire drive.

Her specific complaints in the M4 is again that the side bolsters are too large, pushing her arms forward uncomfortably, and the seat cushion hurts her tailbone. I'm thinking that the solution is to get her a seat and back cushion that will fill in the depth of the seat back, and soften the seat. The question is, short of having something custom made, does anyone have any recommendations for a high quality, comfortable seat/back cushion that would work well with the M4 seats?

Awesome thread! Just read a few of the suggestions to my wife and she was cracking her self up. Luckily for us we both like the ZCP seats.

I laughed when I read that line too. The comfort seats in the 5 series, the same ones that are in the 7, are acknowledged to be some of the very best seats available in any car at any price. If she is finding a problem with those seats the problem undoubtedly lies within. Hence, my original response. Some people are impossible to please.

Nope I actually find the ZCP seats more comfortable than my 15. I'm super tall/large tho so I'm above the shoulder bolsters. (6'7" 285)

I remember the day I took my wife to the dealership for her to try on the M3 seats before I ordered. It was quite scary as I knew if she hasn't happy, I'd have to pick another car. She found the seats acceptable and enjoys the car, especially when she gets to drive.

I guess I'm a bit old-school. It was important to me that she be happy. I would not have been happy putting her in a car she was uncomfortable in. If she hadn't liked the seats, I'd found a compromise car.

I should have elaborated on what she dislikes on the 550i's seats. Her only complaint with the E60 is the side bolsters on the back rest, for the same reason she doesn't like them on the M4: they are too tight to have her arms at her side, but push her arms forward in any other position. The driver doesn't suffer that problem, because your arms are forward holding the steering wheel, but for her as a passenger she finds that feature uncomfortable.

That part of her complaining I can live with, because the fact is both cars are sport cars and I like the bolsters.

Back to the M4: you add the side bolster issue to the fact that the seats are deeper than the 550i, don't have lumbar support, and are much firmer, and it makes a perfect combination for her to complain.

Why do people keep saying that they don't have lumbar support??? They have lumbar support - it is just not adjustable.

You may want to get a coccyx cushion, something like the photos attached. It works wonders for tail bone issues and it will also assist in the person sitting a bit higher, hence making more room for shoulders at the side bolsters level.

+1

My wife uses a similar cushion as she finds the seat bottom in the F80 (non-ZCP) too thin/hard. She had back surgery ~4 years ago due to a herniated disc/pars fractures, so she needs the extra cushion/support or it causes her back pain after sitting in the car for longer periods of time.
