New knock/clunk after Swift Spec-R install
Hey everyone,
I just had Spec-R's installed on my '17 F80 ZCP, done at a reputable race shop in Philly who's been at this quite a while. My car is otherwise stock. They did an alignment along with it. On the drive home, I noticed very clearly a new knock/clunk sound (medium-to-lower pitched, sounds like metal-on-metal) coming from the front left side, brought on by going over medium sized bumps at any speed. The stance of the car looks correct, and the measured drop pre/post checks out (about 25mm front, 10mm rear on both sides). A glance above the front left tire suggests things look correct, from what I can see, as far as spring orientation and being seated on the lower perch. See attached image. In searching for this problem more generally, it sounds like improperly tightened top nuts or endlinks are common culprits. I'm taking it back on Monday. But does anyone have any experience with this issue on Swifts specifically? Or anything else in general that might help the guys at the shop? This seems like it should be a more generically troubleshoot-able problem in experienced hands, but figured it couldn't hurt to check here. I've already confirmed with Swift that mine were not part of the "bad batch". (I only ordered them <2 months ago, from EAS). The guy I got on the line at Swift was very nice and agreeable to talk with the guys at the shop on Monday, which is cool. So hopefully will get it figured out. Thanks for any input ** P.S. Of possible interest: prior to the install, when measuring the wheel gap to serve as the baseline, there was an asymmetry to start with. The gap on the front left was 0.25" larger than on the front right. Could the install have unmasked a problem from the factory? |

I had that same sound with my swift setup in the same location. It was very intermittent but after I had the spring flipped it the proper position, it seems to have gone away. Its been a few days now and I'm still monitoring to see if I have any reaccurances.

Thanks Lee--
Glad to hear your situation got corrected... from what I can tell, the spring appears to be oriented correctly, so I think mine is a different issue. I'm thinking maybe something just not tightened properly. We'll see... |

I had a similar problem and found the spring seat wasn’t fully seated on the top hat. Luckily the front spring doesn’t have too much preload and was able to correct the problem without disassembling the strut assembly. Make sure the spring seat is align and cocentric with the top hat.
