Convertible roof molding repair?

Out of the blue one of the molding parts on my convertible's roof has popped up. I'm not quite sure what has caused this.

Any ideas or tips on how to fix?

Thanks in advance.

There are four small locking tab assemblies that use two captive springs to hold the moulding down. They can be broken if anything pushes down on the moulding with any force.

New moulding Is about $105 primered from someplace like FCP. It needs to be painted to match.

The clips are integral to the moulding, so really no way to repair. Not enough surface area to JB weld.

Thanks SMBF83 and TrueLoyaltyInc for your posts. Good to know its not a major problem.

Please send me the part numbers. Sounds like it might be worth buying all the covers for both sides and getting painted at once. I'm guessing removal and installation isn't too tough?

My local dealer wanted $1000 to repair just what was pictured, which seemed astronomical!

If you search for "bmw 54377184037" you'll see FCP and ECS entries for a left roof molding. (they're different left to right) I haven't found an accurate part number for the clips yet. I'll keep looking.

Is the installation something that can be DIY? or does it require a mechanic? Any tips or pointers on how to remove and install new myself?

I wonder if some 3m Automotive tape would work to get the cover to stay down?

What is it about the design that does not allow the original painted molding to be reused and just the purchase / installation of new clips??

It's a bit hard to explain verbally, but there are two tabs molded into the molding that are what the clips "clip" over. The molding being loose is almost always because those tabs have been broken off the back side of the molding, so the clips have nothing to grab onto to capture the spring that provides the force to hold it down.

New clips would have nowhere to go. The link is to a picture in my gallery that shows these tabs intact. 4 sets of tabs, 2 little tab legs each. A clip goes over each pair.

I'll try and find a break later today to go out to the garage and take some pics of intact clips/springs on mine.

When I bought the car the left middle was missing. Ordered a
New and it comes with 3m taped on the sides. Doesn’t hold that well.

I haven't repaired mine however today while driving on the highway the piece that was sticking up sheered right off. Now I just see the roof and two springs sticking up. Its a lovely look. I guess I need to get this fixed properly.

Does anyone have a video that I can follow? I just noticed my roof molding is also loose, was just going to buy the mounting kit, but it sounds like I need to buy the roof molding itself =(

I used silicone to stick mines down and its been working for the past year or so.. it needs a little bit of flexibility, and the Silicone can flex.

How did you stick the silicone to the plastic cover? Mine have snapped off the roof and the little pins are flipping out but thankfully still in place. If you can explain more I'd be grateful as the moldings aren't sold separately anymore

I'll try to take some pics, I glued the moulding on to the bracket where the springs are. I read another thread here where a guy used double sided tape so that might be an easier option. I'll have to stick the other side, so I'll try the double sided tape, I think he used 3 layers of the double sided tape

Spring out

Hello. The spring you are pointing to has popped out from under my molding and scratched my roof. Which sucks, but how do I get that spring back in place? How important is this spring? Should I not open my roof until it is in place? Please guide me in how to fix this myself. I am clueless as to how to fix this but I want to be able to do some repairs myself.
Thank you in advance

Hi all, mine just cracked at the bottom as i was putting down the top, i heard the cracking and stopped.

I have been searching everywhere for the single part, all i can find is the whole set at about $600 to $700.

Any suggestions on where i can find the single piece?

Thanks
