I would imagine that would be the reason for them to run a 2019 MY since there is almost always a gap between generation release and M car.

It was the same for the E90 M3: MY2009,10,11,12 while the E92 went from MY2008,09,10,11,12,13.

Huh? I owned from new a MY2008 M3. Bought off the lot from dealer in San Rafael, CA. Production date May 1, 2008. I checked my retail sales contract and a copy of the CA title - both say 2008 M3.
