Maybe BMW is going to be cheap and not warrant the S55 engine valve cover even though the concept is the same. Not enough complaints for the S55 but the B58 is used in a lot of applications.

I wonder if it has any involvement with Toyota complaining about this since the B58 is in the Supra and they don’t want any damage to their “Toyota Reliability” reputation. In the latest JD Power dependability study for 2023, Toyota dropped to #7, they used to be #2 or something behind Lexus.

I have yet to experience the issue in either car...does it affect both cars the same? will the S55 shudder and go into limp mode or just he B58? I thought it was just whistling in the S55? perhaps it's these additional symptoms that forced them to have to react to it? or perhaps it's happens much sooner in the B58?

On the S55 your car sounds like a tea kettle boiling and it goes away once you’re above I think 30 MPH. You only really notice it at idle. There’s no shuddering or limp mode. There’s not even a CEL. But someone stated it could blow out the main seal if left alone and that is even more expensive.

My service advisor told me it’s like a 4-5 year issue. It’s very common apparently.

Just had the same issue started happening with my car, annoying whining noise at idle and speeds below 30mph. Was going to take my car to an Indy shop but wanted to check if anyone had luck with the emissions warranty in California?
