I researched this because for me the opposite happend.
My car has no ASD module and ASD was disabled of course, so i was curious and just activated with via BM3 and i get a ton of cracks and pops on downshifts especially noticable at lower speeds and lower rpms, letting off throttle at 30-35kmh and around 15-1600 rpms gives me a really nice pop especially when the exhaust is hot.
Before enabling ASD in BM3, i would not get any burbles below 2k rpm thats how i setup my custom burbles but now with ASD ON i get them even at low rpms 1200-1500 and surprisingly it pops a lot louder than my Burbles at Aggression Level 5 when going above 2k rpm and letting off throttle, in other words they are louder than my predefined custom burbles but a lot shorter in duration of course.

I kinda like that to be honest and keep it enabled even tho i dont have ASD on my car.
Before i got BM3 Tune i tried enabling it on my BimmerCode app but that had no effect on burbles what so ever.

I dont have an F80 its a F23 220i model with n20 motor, it has zero burbles from factory (the 28i models do come with some burbles but not the 20i ones).
So i was very surprised that enabling ASD will just generate such nice pops and crackles on my car, i kinda like it more than the custom burbles that i set up, because it sounds more like OEM'ish.

Cheers

I can't speak to aftermarket tunes on the F8X platform since I have no experience with them (yet...), but I can confirm that the Bimmercode app allows disabling Active Sound Design (ASD, i.e. 'fake' exhaust sound playing through the car stereo speakers), and that disabling ASD did not disable the pops & burbles.
Meanwhile, the BimmerLINK app also allows disabling ASD (which does not disable pops & burbles), and also allows disabling 'Sound Tuning' which is the pops & burbles.

In my experience, ASD and Sound Tuning are two different features and can be toggled on/off independently of one another.
