▀▄ eas | DIY: Macht Schnell Intake Charge Scoops (ICS)
Factory BMW intake systems are well known to be very efficient. The Macht Schnell Intake Charge Scoops (ICS) assist in air delivery by diverting cold, fresh air from behind the kidney grilles into the airbox, with a noticeable power gain found at higher speeds on vehicles equipped with our High Performance Filters. The ICS pieces are constructed from nearly indestructible steel, powdercoated, and will not bend, distort or rust after years of use.
The inside of the ICS pieces have a smooth transition with a gloss powdercoated finish to direct airflow into the intakes, while giving an overall aggressive appearance. ICS are available in Red, Black, Yellow, Orange and Blue Powdercoated finishes. Features - Aids in additional airflow to factory airbox, additional gains when combined with High Performance Filters - Available in 5 colors: Red, Black, Blue, Orange, Yellow - Quick installation for DIY type - Steel construction with powdercoated exterior, nearly indestructible - Elegant textured exterior, smooth gloss inner for maximum air delivery with no restriction - Will not rust, or deteriorate over time - Sold as a set Models Supported 2015+ F8X M3/M4 Installation 1. Remove Kidney Grilles. These are accessed by removing torx bolts holding the top of the bumper cover and depressing the tabs from the backside and pulling grill outward. Remove plastic mesh screen from intake duct by pulling out of place. Keep in safe place or discard. 2. Remove backing from Intake Charge Scoop and position into place. Clean mounting surfaces with alcohol-based cleaner to ensure bonding. 3. Align ICS with intake opening 4. Press ICS into place 5. Repeat steps for remaining intake 6. Install completed. Reinstall Kidney Grilles and Torx Screws. Install complete, enjoy!

Won't be doing any dyno runs since the fans cannot replicate the airflow seen while driving.

They lock in securely on their own, but the tape will add some additional security they stay in place.

Both. Getting additional air (on dual intakes) is never a bad thing.

Sorry, but saying you'll get a performance boost without providing numbers isn't a great way to market something. Is it directing more air? I'm sure. Enough to get a noticeable performance increase? Questionable.

Definitely a performance increase is to be expected, but one would need a Vericom or similar device to show specific numbers.

BMW OEM air ducts are "passive," meaning they require a vacuum to pull fresh air from the vents to the filters. If your OEM box is in tack, air scoops won't do much for your car as the vacuum is strong enough to feed the filters fresh air. If you decided to remove your OEM box then upgrade to BMS or other open air intakes, the "passive" air ducts won't feed the filters any fresh air (no vacuum). Adding the scoops with after market intakes like BMS will reduce the chance of heat soak and improve performance.
In order to convert the OEM air ducts from passive to active, air scoops are required (re-direct the incoming air by 90 degrees). See sample below.

bumping this old thread. Just installed these..
On a stock airbox, with stock filters, will these do more harm than good? My car drives different now. The turbo spool sounds have changed, it is less audible overall. Less "swoosh" and sucking noise, however, more high pitched whistling to a degree. Not sure how to interpret this... Throttle response changed too, I believe it is a little worse/more sluggish. Could be placebo but with the changes in noise i don't think so. I can see the benefit of these scoops if one pairs it with an open intake system, no question. On a closed system, I think it cuts down on the area of air that the stock system can suck in (once on throttle). I get air is forced in, but without the scoops the intake holes behind the grill have a much larger area to vacuum air in from. Lastly, on a stock/closed air box -- when crusing off throttle, air is just being forced into the intake against the filter, but not being pulled through. This irks me for reasons unknown. On a side note, the quality of the scoops are great. They fit perfectly around the side holes and if installed correctly, they are incredibly secure. The red ones look killer on my BSM/SO m4. Newer F82 owner just trying to wrap my head around this stuff. Last edited by Tall Tom Cruise; 11-19-2018 at 02:37 PM.. |

Any update regarding first impressions being accurate etc? I was thinking of installing these on my F83 and am really curious. I have K&N drop ins and the charcoal filters removed but still using the stock airboxes.
