2018 F81 M3 Touring 6MT Build Thread

Hi Pals –

This weekend we officially started the BUILD phase of the project, and by build, i mean disassembly 😜.

My friend owns a series of shops in Portland, so i'm renting a bit of space so I have access to a couple of lifts over the weekends.

Numerous friends are helping me when they can – both with the actual wrenching, organizing, and videoing. Ryan Haines, owner of Dynasport PDX is keeping tabs to make sure i don't totally fuck this thing up!

Here are some initial pics from Days 1 & 2
We got the F31 in the air, got the underside of the car fully stripped, dropped both subframes and assemblies, and cut off the rear diff protection pyramid.

Love an M power touring build!

Did an E46 M3 touring (but standard body) build a few years ago and currently doing an E39 M5 touring build.

The bulk of the significant work will happen on the weekends, but during some weeknights i'll do the smaller stuff like stripping the interiors, etc...

I'll keep you all posted with photos and let you know when we get some videos together, too.

Just curious how you go about tackling such a huge project? I mean, do you have a pretty solid plan / roadmap or do you sorta wing it? Much admiration!

I think there are around 8 or 9 F81 conversions at this point.

Nick P in the UK
"Kam" in the UK has built like 3 of them
Somebody in Scandanavia (maybe Norway) built a white one
There's a Fashion Grey F81CS in The Netherlands
A Dakar Yellow in the UK
A Purple in the UK

There's a Purple one here in the states in Philly

And every single one of them is DCT

Tons of planning, lots of research - talking to people who have already done this, whether it's Nick Prichard in the UK, or my mechanic who has done an E39 M5 Touring and E46 M3 Touring.

Also tons of YouTube watching on how to do things the right way in general, and then specifics about how to disassemble certain interior pieces.

Some of it i'll have to figure out along the way, like precisely how to fabricate the rear bumper, and which parts of which wiring harnesses will I use to get fully functional cars.

Thanks for your reply, OP! I too have watched a bunch of the F81 Youtube videos and I find the whole process fascinating! (I’m particularly fond of the Dakar Yellow Touring in the Evolve Automotive video.) It will be great to follow your adventure from start to finish!

Do you cut up the M chassis to graft the hatch or use the hatch chassis and add all the M bits to it?
