E85 Fueling Requirements

Yes its been discussed.

Running pure stage 2+ turbos, FBO, catless etc.

For E85, what upgrades are REQUIRED vs what is RECOMMENDED?

Which kit do people like the most?

Easiest answer is you need a tune to run e85. BM3 or MHD map packs lets you run up to E30, anything over e30 will require a custom tune.

You can run full E85 using a flex fuel kit and the multimap. That’s currently what my car has. Stock turbo and catless, BM3 flexfuel kit and running the BM3 multimap. The tune auto adjusts everything based on ethanol content. Obviously you’ll make more power with a custom tune but either way I highly recommend the flexfuel kit so you don’t have to worry about being exactly spot on with mixes

Yeah my question should have been “which flex fuel kit do people like best” lol

Ya I think it would really just depend on which side you’re on, BM3 vs MHD. I’m pretty sure each kit works with either one since they transmit over CANBUS, but obviously would be best to stick with their respective kits. Most of the people I know tho run BM3 and their kit. Their kit is also extremely easy to install no cutting or splicing.
I sound sponsored by them but I’m not lol

So I had to think about this when I was preparing the mod list for my Kratos turbos.

I chose to do eu5 injectors with the dorch hpfp. Kratos and the dorch website state that 800 whp on e85 is attainable with this setup. With my goal being 750whp I was happy with this outcome.

I was undecided on whether the lpfp needed to be upgraded but for the relatively small cost compared to everything else I decided to go with the brushless stage 3.

I think at a minimum for e85 you need a hpfp upgrade and upgraded injectors, with dorch/eu5 being the cheapest option. Stock turbo e85 already pushes the high pressure side to the limit.

That said, my car is coming out of the shop tomorrow so I haven’t had the chance to see what the limits are and how tuning goes.

Bend flex kit with filter
Precision Racing stage 3 brushless lpfp
Dorch lift kit
EU5s
Bend flex tune

IMO all required if you want carefree, safe, flex fuel setup.

I do agree having additional supporting mods for anything is always beneficial. Lift kit, injectors, LPFP, HPFP etc.

Why choose Bend vs the BM3 kit?

The BM3 kit doesn't come with a fuel filter.

I am going to run the MHD flex fuel sensor with the Bend fuel filter kit. I believe any kit from BM3, MHD or Bend will work with any of the platforms.

I went with the kit that connects on top of the fuel pump. I cant say for certain but with Bends fuel filter and sensor kit the ethanol content is read closer to the motor so maybe a bit safer if you fill up and stomp on the gas on the way out before the measured fuel reaches the motor.

Ahhh interesting point to mention. Yeah I think that would def be more accurate, but I guess it depends if you're full E85 or running E30, E60 blends etc.

That being said, does everyone still recommend BM3 or Bend kit for those running blended ethanol?

My issue is that there's legit 2 stations within an hour of me that carry E85. While I WANT the power that comes with it...there's going to be far more fill ups with 93 oct vs being able to get to one of those 2 stations...so I guess I really want something that will be able to adapt (on the fly if possible), or at least run without issues if its getting a mix of E85 some days and then 93 oct for a week or two, then maybe E50 etc....

Lol I thought about that, but I live downtown in Boston in a condo complex and I cant even begin to image the amount of whining and complaints I would get storing a barrel of E in the garage...

That’s essentially the entire point of a flex tune. I pay zero attention to what blend I’m running. Ok, that’s a lie because I always check EcuTek to see the final percentage after I fill up (for funzies). Regardless of what’s in the tank, the car always runs at peak, and flawlessly.

Side note - ethanol quality varies massively. From the same exact station I’ve gotten from E70-E82 at an “E85” pump. One of the many reasons why I would never do an E85 tune. A “full E85” tune also has to comprise somewhere - Either not making peak power due to needing some safety margin to account for possible shitty ethanol, or not, and a tank of E70 can make a boom.

This is the only other place that sell a high-quality filter but you'll have to talk to them for the hoses.

If still have to integrate it into whatever kit I buy, may save $100-$200 all in I’m guessing but is it worth it 🤔

Yeah, it's an option with a little leg work but it will work and offer several filter options. This is the path I was going to take but have yet to conduct a deep dive on fitment, hoses and fittings, keep me posted if you go down this path.
$200 saved is $200 for dyno time

I just emailed them asking if they had all the parts necessary to make a “kit” from scratch. Also asked about converting all the lines in the car to AN fittings been wanting to do that for a while.

Awesome, digging thru their website I found this bracket that holds filter. Usually, the E90 stuff fits Fx platform, worth exploring.
